Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; General Linguistics; Language Acquisition; Psycholinguistics; Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 26-Apr-2020

Meeting Description:

Duocon is an annual conference that aims to celebrate language learning,
multilingualism, and multiculturalism by bringing together language-learning
enthusiasts, researchers, and developers of language-learning products. It is
hosted by Duolingo, a free language-learning app whose mission is to bring
accessible language education to the world. This year, Duocon will include a
research poster session to connect language learners with language
researchers.

Second Call for Papers:

We are inviting proposals for poster presentations. Posters should communicate
language-learning research to a general audience of non-experts. Presenters
will receive a travel stipend and complementary registration for the
conference, which includes associated perks such as food, drink, and social
events during the two-day conference.

Details:
Posters should fall into one of two categories:

Original research. An original research poster should present a research
project carried out by the poster presenter, either individually or on a team.
The poster should pose a research question, describe methods, identify
results, and describe the implications of the research for language learning.
The poster should be written in a way that is engaging and accessible for a
general audience of non-experts.

Research synthesis. A research synthesis should present a literature review of
a topic in language learning OR it should describe what the presenter
considers to be the most exciting finding in the literature in the past 20
years. This poster should summarize the topic and present it to a general
audience in a way that is engaging and accessible without being overly
simplistic.

Research topics can come from the following fields:
- Language acquisition and language learning
- Language policy and language education
- Linguistics, including but not limited to phonetics, phonology, syntax, and
semantics
- Language ideology and sociolinguistics
- Teaching and applied linguistics
- Language learning with technology/computer-assisted language learning
- Bilingualism and multilingualism
- Psycholinguistics
- Translation and interpreting
- Other topics in language learning and teaching

Poster proposals will be evaluated on the following criteria:
- Will the topic being discussed be of interest to language-learning
enthusiasts?
- Is the proposal written in a way that is accessible to non-experts?
- Are the implications for language learning clearly articulated?

Materials to Submit:
Please submit a single document that includes your name, institute
affiliation, whether your proposal is for original research or a research
synthesis, proposal title, and a 300-word proposal.

Your proposal should outline the plan for your research poster and should be
written for a non-academic audience interested in languages and language
learning but without formal training in your field. Your proposal should fit
one of the two criteria outlined above (original research or research
synthesis) and should highlight how the research topic can be applied to
language learning and language teaching.

How to Apply:
Please email your proposal as a PDF to learning-sciencesduolingo.com with the
subject line “[your last name] Duocon 2020 Poster Proposal.”

Timeline:
Applications should be submitted by April 26, 2020, 11:59 p.m. Notifications
will be sent out by May 18, 2020.
