Gender, gendering, and vast categories of gendered systems are different
dimensions and reflections of one of the many contemporary issues challenging
ideologies and practices of Christianity, especially in Africa where
conservatism still holds firmer in Christianity than in the ideas, ideologies
and practices of gender system. The situation in Africa, which remains an
interesting praxis, develops from global attention on gender issues that has
spurred scholarly works in many communities of the world, with a dominant
focus on policies and practices in the secular world. Different dimensions of
the relations between gender and Christianity have been operationalized in
church administration, governance, social, political, educational,
professional circles and other spheres of life.

While there is a catalogue of research undertakings on the different
dimensions of gender, gendering, gender processes, and its ideologies, and
practices in different social settings, it appears there is a paucity of
studies that have provided contemporary accounts of how these complex
relations are negotiated in today’s Christianity in Africa. Following this
need to provide a contemporary account of the complexity characterising the
relation between gender and Christianity in Africa, the editors of the
proposed book volume therefore invite contributions that will explicate on the
different dimensions of relationship between gender and Christianity in
Africa. Such contributions can of course focus on the ideological construction
of women, men, masculinities and femininities, as well as other gender issues
that the African Christian community continues to contend with in our
contemporary times. For example, contributions may address issues relating to
how change in perception and construction of today’s gender system impinges or
affects practices and ideologies in the Christendom. Also, themes of
contributions may focus on gender and the notion of headship, marriage,
clergy, laity, Christian ethics, evangelicalism and gender matters;
Catholicism and gender; Pentecostalism and the new gender order; orthodoxy,
faith and gender; the conflict between the African culture and the new gender
order; gender and religious agency and many more.

All theoretical orientations are welcome.
