Description:

The University of Maryland Applied Research Laboratory for Intelligence and
Security (ARLIS) seeks to hire an Assistant Research Scientist to work on new
projects in computational linguistics, natural language processing, and/or
computational social science. Projects include support and development of
automated personality trait identification in languages other than English;
detection of emotion and deception in online profiles; and advanced human
language technology (including automatic speech recognition and cross-language
information retrieval).

The Assistant Research Scientist may support the development of a social media
data collection and natural language processing (NLP) pipeline; the
development of algorithms for data processing and analysis; and the
development of GUIs, websites, and survey platforms. The Assistant Research
Scientist is expected to take an active role in developing and advancing the
research projects, working closely with other research faculty and scientists.
Where relevant, the Assistant Research Scientist will assist on publication or
reports for clients.

This is a full-time position. The applicant must be a U.S. citizen and able to
obtain a U.S. Government security clearance. An active security clearance is
preferred. The position is available immediately and the search will remain
open until filled. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. The
initial appointment is for one year, with the opportunity for renewal
thereafter. We especially encourage applications from women and members of
minorities that are underrepresented in science. 

Required Skills:
- Ph.D. in computational linguistics, computational social science, artificial
intelligence/machine learning, or related field 
- Experience with processing Mandarin Chinese, Persian, or Korean
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience with machine learning (especially deep neural
nets), pre-trained language models (e.g., BERT, ULMFiT, ELMo), and semantic
vectors
- Experience with document classification and regression
- Experience with corpus collection, web-scraping, social media data
collection, annotation 
- Experience with statistical processing, e.g. Pandas, R, SAS 
- Experience with cloud-based webhosting and data management (experience with
Amazon Web Services (AWS) preferred)
- Experience deidentifying textual data
