Description:

UMD ARLIS seeks to hire an Faculty Research Specialist, pending funding, to
work on new projects applying computational approaches to range of challenges
of interest to the United States Government. Projects range from support and
development of advanced human language technology (including automatic speech
recognition, cross-language information retrieval, and morphological parsers);
and automated personality trait identification from social media in languages
other than English; to detection of emotion and deception in online profiles.
The specialist may support the development of a social media data collection
and natural language processing (NLP) pipeline; the development of algorithms
for data processing and analysis. Some projects may encompass developing GUIs,
websites, or survey platforms. The specialist is expected to take an active
role in developing and advancing the research projects, working closely with
other specialists. Where relevant, the specialist will assist publication or
in reports for clients. The specialist will be responsible for some
administrative tasks.

For this FRS position, a B.S., M.S., or equivalent, in a field related to
computer science, computational social science, computational linguistics, or
artificial intelligence/machine learning must be awarded prior to the start
date.

Required Skills:
- Minimum of 3 years programming experience (Python preferred; Java
acceptable)
- Experience working in a team and working to strict deadlines
- Ability to handle basic administrative tasks
- Work with social media data collection, analysis, or processing

Preferred Skills:
- Familiarity with cloud-based webhosting and data management (experience with
Amazon Web Services (AWS) preferred)
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience machine learning/AI or data science
- Familiarity with machine learning packages, esp. deep neural nets,
pre-trained language models (e.g., BERT, ULMFiT, ELMo), and semantic vectors
- Familiarity with document classification and regression 
- Comfortable working with programmers and non-programmers on a team 
- Some knowledge of linguistics
- Familiarity with statistical processing, e.g. Pandas, R, SAS
- Familiarity with processing of a language other than English 
- Experience working with non-roman scripts in UTF-8 
- Experience anonymizing textual data
