In Memoriam: Giovanni Parodi Sweis

With a very heavy heart and with great sadness we would like to let the
academic community know that on 14 November 2020 we lost the very much
appreciated and loved linguist, colleague and friend, Giovanni Parodi Sweis.

Giovanni was professor and researcher at the Institute of Literature and
Language Sciences at the Centre for Studies at the Pontificia Universidad
Católica de Valparaíso, Chile. His academic life has always been connected to
the Catholic University of Valparaiso: he received his Bachelor in Languages
and English Literature in 1986, his Master in Applied Linguistics in 1990 and
his PhD in Linguistics in 1997.

Giovanni’s main areas of research involved psycholinguistic approaches to
discourse, text linguistics and corpus linguistics. His latest significant
research advances include the employment of eye-tracking in the processing of
language and the study of the Spanish neutral pronoun ello.

Giovanni was director of the UNESCO Chair for Reading and Writing for Chile
and a corresponding member of the Chilean Academy of Languages. He was also
Editor-in-Chief of the journal Signos.

Giovanni was a kind and generous man, and we were lucky, in fact, privileged,
to know Giovanni in person, to work with him and to share many unforgettable
moments during our collaborative work.

The linguistics, corpus linguistics and computational linguistics communities
have lost an eminent scholar, and a kind and supportive colleague and friend.
