Linguistic Field(s): Historical Linguistics; Semantics; Syntax; Typology

Call Deadline: 31-Mar-2020

Meeting Description:

This workshop on Discours Particles aims to bring together linguists working
on discourse or modal particles in any linguistically relevant field
(diachrony, semantic-pragmatics, syntax). Studies that look into the role
particles play in clause typing, as well as approaches that account for
particles expressing evidentiality, epistemicy and modality are welcome.

One of the goals of the workshop is to investigate the syntactic behaviour of
such particles, namely their syntactic nature, position and interaction with
other constituents. Additionally, this one-day workshop aims to provide an
opportunity to present and discuss the relation between discourse/ modal
particles and the formation of utterance meaning; we are particularly
concerned with those particles which, apart from occurring in declarative
contexts, are also used in questions.

Call for Papers:

We invite submissions addressing these and similar questions related to
discourse/modal particles and we would be very pleased to receive proposals
from a typologically diverse range of languages.

Keynote speakers:
Daniel Gutzmann (University of Cologne),
Marco Coniglio (Georg-August-Universität Göttingen) and
Waltraud Paul (CNRS).

Submission guidelines and important dates:
- Abstract proposals should be a maximum of 2 pages (including references,
examples, tables, keywords, etc.) and must have 2.5 cm (1 inch) margins on all
sides and be set in Times New Roman with a 12pt font.
- Submissions are limited to two per author, with at most one paper being
single-authored.
- The submission must be anonymous and not reveal the identity of the
author(s) in any way.
- Abstracts should be submitted in PDF format through EasyChair by March 15,
2020.
