Subject: Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition: PhD Student, Cardiff University, United Kingdom

 Institution/Organization: Cardiff University
Department: Centre for Language and Communication Research
Web Address: https://www.cardiff.ac.uk

Level: PhD

Duties: Research

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; Language Acquisition
Usage-based language learning theory

Description:

The Centre for Language and Communication at Cardiff University, supported by
the ESRC Doctoral Training Partnership for Wales (Wales DTP), in collaboration
with project partner SaySomethingin (https://www.saysomethingin.com), invites
applications from exceptional candidates for a fully-funded ESRC DTP
collaborative PhD studentship:

Project: Usage-Based Language Learning: How it works
Supervisor: Dr Andreas Buerki (buerkia at cardiff.ac.uk)

The project aims to investigate a radically usage-based approach to the
learning of second languages (L2s), including Welsh as an L2. This topic and
the basic parameters of the project are given, but the precise details will be
decided jointly by the student, supervisor and collaborating partner,
SaySomethingin. Usage-based theories of language and of language learning have
become very influential over the past 15 years, including in explaining first
language acquisition. However, its insights have not been widely applied to L2
learning where methodology still follows more traditional understandings of
language learning. This project addresses this shortcoming by investigating
how fully usage-based L2 learning would work. The project therefore represents
a unique opportunity to create significant new theoretical insight with clear
potential for practical benefit to improve L2 learning techniques.
Consequently, the student undertaking the research has the opportunity to make
their mark on two highly active areas of linguistic enquiry: usage-based
theories and language learning.

Eligibility:

Full awards (fees plus maintenance stipend) are open to students who satisfy
the ESRC’s UK residency requirements (usually 3 years of residency in the UK
prior to start). The award is available on a 1+3 or a +3 basis. The 1+3
studentship provides funding for four years, completing the MA in Language and
Communication Research in the 1st year, followed by 3 years research funding
for a PhD. Awards will cover tuition fees and maintenance grant and includes
access to an additional Research Training Support Grant and internship
opportunities. Candidates should have an excellent academic background in the
social sciences, holding a 1st or strong upper 2nd class degree; applications
from those also holding a relevant research training Masters degree (or an
equivalent background in research training) will be considered for a +3 award.

Application Procedure:

A completed application form for admission to doctoral study should be
submitted to Cardiff University via the Direct Application Service at the URL
below by the deadline of 12 noon, 3 February 2020. Applicants should indicate
in the funding section of the PhD application form that they are applying for
ESRC funding. Within the online PhD application form, you should indicate in
the funding section that you are applying for an ESRC collaborative award. In
the section marked ‘Research Project Title’ please write the title of this
collaborative award, “Usage-Based Language Learning: How It Works”. In the
section marked ‘Supervisor’ please write ‘Andreas Buerki’. If you have any
difficulties or queries, please email encap-pg at cardiff.ac.uk. Please email
encap-pg at cardiff.ac.uk for information about required supporting documents.

Informal enquiries are encouraged and should be addressed to Dr Buerki
(BuerkiA at cardiff.ac.uk).
