Meeting Description:

HuSlx is a biennial conference (Hungarian Élőnyelvi Konferencia) that provides
a forum to present recent research in sociolinguistics, dialectology and
applications. The focus of the conference is Hungarian as used in Hungary and
her 7 neighboring countries, as well as issues related to language maintenance
and shift, language rights, and language in education. The conferences
alternate between locations in Hungary and a neighboring country, the last one
was held in Budapest, Hungary 2018. The main theme of HuSlx21 is the border as
a convergence and divergence factor in language.

Call for Papers:

The organizers at Ferenc Rákóczi II College of Higher Education are honored to
invite you to the 21st Hungarian Sociolinguistics Conference in Berehove
(Beregszász), Ukraine, 8–10 October 2020.

The main theme of the conference: The border as a convergence and divergence
factor in language.

Abstracts will be submitted online, the details of the submission will be
described in the 2nd Circular Call for Papers.

Since the Trianon Treaty (1920), the border has played a decisive role in the
discourses about Hungarian national identity, the concept of the nation, and
the nation in general. Once drawn, political boundaries will inevitably begin
to influence the language spoken and written within and across the border. As
these administrative boundaries determine the social networks of speakers, it
is natural that contacts inside the borders become more intense, and
cross-border contacts are sometimes hampered and therefore weakened. Thus,
state borders are dual in nature: they evoke convergence and divergence at the
same time. Varieties within the border gradually begin to converge, while
varieties trapped on the other side of the border intensify separate
development. Launched in 1988, the series of Hungarian Sociolinguistics
Conferences has repeatedly addressed the linguistic implications of post-WWI
national border changes. One hundred years after the Trianon decision, perhaps
it is time to recap a fresh, 21st-century vision of what is worth knowing
about this issue, with new perspectives, i.e. not from the point of view of
grievances and complaints but based on the research-methodological principles
of (socio)linguistics and its related fields of science.

In addition to all these topics, any lecture is accepted that touches on the
central topic of the conference in some way, such as segregation of language
and dialect, dialect and language boundaries, etc.

Workshops can also be organized at the suggestion of participants. A one-page
summary is expected from the potential workshop leaders by March 31, 2020.

The languages of the conference are Hungarian and English.

The second circular (February 2020) will contain information on conference
fees and registration.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at
 21.elonyelvikonferencia at gmail.com
We look forward to welcoming you among the speakers at the 21st Hungarian
Sociolinguistics Conference.
