Call Deadline: 23-Feb-2020

Meeting Description:

The Linguistics Department at the University of the Witwatersrand,
Johannesburg, is proud to be hosting the first annual Southern African
Linguistics Students Conference. This new conference aims to bring together
southern African postgraduate-level students working within a broad variety of
linguistics fields (including formal, socio-, psycho-, and applied
linguistics). Students will have the opportunity to present their research
(ongoing or completed) to a broad audience and receive feedback and new
perspectives on their work. ‘Students’ here refers to current MA and PhD
students, as well as individuals who have graduated with an MA or PhD within
the past year. This conference provides students with an important platform
for networking and exposure, as well as a small, friendly, collaborative space
within which to develop one’s ideas.

Call for Papers:

Half-hour (15-20 minutes presentation followed by 10-15 minutes informal
discussion) presentation slots are available to all participants, and there
are no parallel sessions or keynote speakers. There is no registration fee,
and lunch will be provided, but participants will need to pay their own way in
terms of accommodation and travel. The organisers may make a small number of
travel bursaries available if funding is obtained. In an effort to be as
inclusive as possible, a limited number of Skype sessions will be available,
should an accepted participant have no means to attend the conference in
person.

Specific Instructions for Abstract Submission:
- Abstracts should be one page in length and include examples and references.
- Abstracts should be submitted anonymously.
- The only submission method is via EasyAbs on LinguistList.
- All non-English examples/data must be properly glossed.
- Research can be in any linguistics or linguistics-related field
(theoretical/formal linguistics - phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax,
semantics; sociolinguistics; psycholinguistics; applied linguistics - language
teaching, translation studies etc.; language policy; etc.).
- Deadline for submission: 23 Feb 2020.
