Job Location: Christchurch, New Zealand

Job Title: Post-Doctoral Fellow
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Ling & Literature; Linguistic Theories

Description:

New Zealand Institute of Language Brain and Behaviour (NZILBB)
College of Arts
University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand

- Full-time at 37.5 hours per week (1.0 FTE)
- Fixed-Term positions (one for 2.5 years, one for 2 years)

What You Will Do:

The New Zealand Institute of Language, Brain and Behaviour is seeking two
Post-Doctoral Fellows to join the team of researchers working on two related
projects funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand Marsden Fund: (1) Tracking
the Emergence of an Adult Proto-lexicon and (2) Awakening the Proto-lexicon.
The research team comprises Professor Jen Hay and Professor Jeanette King
(University of Canterbury), Dr Peter Keegan (University of Auckland) and
Professor Janet Pierrehumbert (University of Oxford).

Both projects arise from our recent work showing that New Zealanders who do
not speak Māori have implicitly absorbed a large amount of statistical and
lexical information about Māori from the ambient environment. These new
projects focus on implicit word-knowledge - the large Māori 'proto-lexicon' of
word-forms that appear to be stored by non-Māori-speaking New Zealanders,
without awareness, and without semantics.

Project (1) studies the emergence of an adult proto-lexicon. How quickly is
this adult proto-lexicon built? Does it require exposure to the language in
childhood? Is childhood exposure sufficient? Does knowledge of Māori
word-structure co-develop with the proto-lexicon? Project (2) considers the
implications for language learning. Does a potential language learner with a
large proto-lexicon have an advantage in language learning? How easy is it to
attach semantic knowledge to an existing proto-wordform? The projects will be
run together. While each postdoc will be assigned to one of the projects, both
fellows will work closely together. The position available for project (1) is
for 2.5 years, and the position available for project (2) is for 2 years.

Who You Are:

Applications are invited from researchers with expertise in word learning,
language acquisition, Māori, psycholinguistics, statistical modelling, and/or
experimental design.

The successful applicant will have a PhD in linguistics, psychology or a
related area. Applicants with strong technical skills (e.g. statistical
analysis in R, programming, corpus analysis) will be at an advantage.

The Postdoctoral Fellow will be employed by the New Zealand Institute of
Language Brain and Behaviour, at the University of Canterbury. For more
information on the team, please visit us @ NZILBB
