Subject: Natural Language Processing MS; Apply by July 15

UCSC is starting a new Masters in Natural Language Processing this year. The
application deadline for the program has been extended to July 15 and we are
looking to admit a small number of highly motivated, top students who would
like to join the program for the academic year 2020-2021. Please feel free to
forward this to any qualified undergraduates.

The M.S. NLP program is a 1-year intensive program designed to provide the
breadth and depth of knowledge needed for a successful career in Natural
Language Processing https://grad.soe.ucsc.edu/nlp. It emphasizes practical
proficiency in applying the relevant skills through courses focusing on core
algorithms in machine learning, data science and analytics, and Natural
Language Processing. The program offers small classes and includes a three
quarter capstone project where students will get real-world experience working
in small groups working on an industry-relevant challenging NLP problem.

This is a fantastic opportunity to improve your resume and job prospects.
There is a great demand in Silicon Valley for people with NLP and Machine
learning training, and the number of jobs in NLP is constantly growing. See
https://grad.soe.ucsc.edu/nlp/jobs . You can also look further on Linked In
Jobs search or Glass Door to see jobs and salaries. We estimate that the
salaries for students who complete this MS should easily offset the program
cost within several years.

The application portal can be found at: https://applygrad.ucsc.edu/apply/

Due to the special circumstances this year, we have a slightly unusual late
application process. When you go to the application portal, it may appear that
 the deadline is past, but
It is definitely open, and it will allow you to start your application but
not submit (see below).

The deadline is July 15 but we would really like you to put in your
application as soon as possible so that we have more time to review them!

This is the timeline
July 15, 2020 - Applications Due
July 22, 2020 - Reviews of Applications/Admissions Decisions Finalized
July 30, 2020 - Applicants Must Accept/Decline

The Process:
Students can start applications now. Please start working on these as soon as
possible. However you will initially be unable to submit the application.
Only applicants that we plan to admit will be allowed to officially submit
their application (submit/pay fee). We will be emailing admitted applications
to request they formally submit their application. Throughout June and July,
applicants should keep an eye on their email inbox and check spam folders
regularly for instructions from cse-gradadvising at ucsc.edu on how to submit
their application. If you do not hear from us before July 30th, it may mean
that your application did not meet the program's eligibility requirements.

Due to COVID-19,
--The GRE requirement is waived.
--Only one letter of recommendation is required
--Due to the short time window, you can write a short version of your
statement of purpose
--The personal history essay is optional, and can also be abbreviated.
--Your transcripts can be unofficial.
--If you have faced adversity or obstacles you have overcome you can tell us
about that via the optional personal statement.

If you have any questions please contact nlp at ucsc.edu.
Remember, we are only going to let students that we plan to accept actually
submit the application and pay the fee.

Best,
Marilyn Walker
