Meeting Description:

Theme: Turning ‘Right to English’ into Reality: Need for a Paradigm Shift in
the Global Context.
Students in the Indian education system are taught English through their first
language in most cases. An Indian classroom in English is a mixed classroom.
Other than in some elite institutions, a typical classroom in any country
using English as its second or foreign language has students from diverse
backgrounds and disciplines. India has two million students in English
classrooms who do not speak English at home, including the first-generation
learners. This conference would contemplate on many questions and aspects of
ELT in non-native contexts:
1. How can we ensure that these students learn English along with others, as
quickly as others and as happily as others?
2. What method and material should a teacher use in the classroom?
3. Do we need to write more interesting textbooks?
4. Should the vast treasure of material on YouTube remain unwelcome in a
classroom?
5. What about films, audio and video clips?
6. Are our teachers trained and oriented to use these available resources and
help their students achieve the desired goals?
7. Should India continue to have a kind of teacher education which takes two
years and a lot of money to produce less than ten per cent of the annual
requirement of trained teachers?
8. Is it all right to use mobile phones in the classrooms?

A lot of questions of this kind must be addressed to make teaching and
learning English successful and pleasant.
