Subject: Expressing causality in L1 and L2

Full Title: Expressing causality in L1 and L2

Date: 20-May-2021 - 21-May-2021
Location: Catholic University John-Paul II, Lublin, Poland
Contact Person: Claire Martinot
Meeting Email: cause.lublin2020 at gmail.com

Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Language Acquisition; Semantics; Syntax

Call Deadline: 15-Jan-2021

Meeting Description:

Causality is, first of all, the result of an interpretation that our mind
poses between two situations, states, events, one of which determines the
other. Causality is, therefore, an oriented relation, expressed in language by
a type of argumentative sequence (Carel, 2001, Ducrot, 2001) which manifests
itself in very diverse ways in the language, including without the (explicit)
support of a marker.

Among the characteristics of the expression of causality, one can note that
the number of connectors dedicated to the causal relation (Fr. parce que,
puisque, car, comme and some others) is reduced or that the causal relations
are not all reversible. We shall explore to what extent language distinguishes
the different types of causality envisaged by our thought: the fortuitous,
factual cause versus the voluntary, human cause. Or again, if the language
distinguishes different degrees of causality, for example weak causality or
strong causality. There are various types of causality (logical correlation,
temporal relation, circumstantial relation etc.) and the various means that
languages use to express causal relations. Linguistic inquiry on the
functioning of causal relations in any language or between several languages
constitutes Axis 1 of the conference.

Axis 2 of the conference will be more directly related to the production and
understanding of causal relations by specific speakers. Indeed, the diversity
of the means made available by each language does not imply that these means
are used in the same way by its speakers.
Children or adults, native or non-native speakers, in oral or written
production/comprehension – there are numerous parameters that could influence
the expression of causal relations.

We welcome proposals which will present, in different theoretical frameworks,
the acquisition of causal relations:
- by children of different ages, in several mother tongues,
- by children or adults with language impairments,
- by adults who speak a foreign language,
- by more or less educated speakers whose same speech will be compared both
orally and in writing.

Call for Papers:

The languages of the conference are French and English.

The proposals should be sent by 15 January 2021 to the following address:
cause.lublin2020 at gmail.com

Abstract (Word) must be 600 to 800 words in length and include the title of
the proposal, the name and first name of the author(s) and their affiliation.
The references at the end of the abstract are only those mentioned in the
text.

Notification of acceptance will be sent to the corresponding author by 15
February 2021.

The conference site will be accessible in December.

Papers will be considered for publication in the Croatian linguistic journal
Rasprave.

Registration fees: 60 euros (40 euros for students). Payment methods and
