The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts invites
applications for a Director of the Global Languages academic unit, beginning
July 1, 2021, or as soon thereafter as possible. This position is eligible for
benefits and visa sponsorship.

The mission of the Global Languages unit is to provide MIT students with an
education in languages, cultures, and inter-cultural communication.

The responsibilities of the position will include: development and
implementation of strategic planning and academic initiatives, curriculum
development, mentorship of Senior Lecturers, liaising with faculty and other
stakeholders across the Institute, management of unit resources and exercise
of fiduciary responsibility. The Director will teach; conduct, oversee, and
disseminate research and pedagogical projects; advise students; provide
service to the unit, School and/or Institute.

As Global Languages is an interdisciplinary unit, the departmental affiliation
of the Director of Global Languages will depend on the candidate's academic
specialization and choice.

The position will be either a tenured faculty appointment or at the level of
Professor of the Practice, depending on the candidate's experience and
qualifications.

If the appointment is made at the level of Professor of the Practice, the
contract will be for five-years, with the possibility of indefinite renewals
based on performance reviews.

If the appointment is made at the level of Full or Associate Professor, the
Director will be a full member of their home-department but will be offered
partial teaching relief and reduced administrative obligations in recognition
of the GL Directorship.

The successful applicant will have a stellar academic record including
research, teaching, creative initiatives, administration of at least three
years, and interest and experience in second language pedagogy. PhD required
in linguistics, literature or related field.
