Full Title: Phonetics and Phonology in Europe 2021
Short Title: PaPE

Date: 21-Jun-2021 - 23-Jun-2021
Location: Barcelona, Spain
Contact Person: Pilar Prieto
Meeting Email: pape2021 at upf.edu
Web Site: https://pape2021.upf.edu/

Linguistic Field(s): Phonetics; Phonology

Call Deadline: 30-Nov-2020

Meeting Description:

PaPE 2021 will be held from Monday 21 to Wednesday 23 June 2021 at the
Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, Catalonia. It is the fourth Phonetics
and Phonology in Europe conference, following successful conferences in Lecce,
Italy (2019), Cologne, Germany (2017), and Cambridge, UK (2015). Prior to
2015, a series of biennial PaPI (Phonetics and Phonology in Iberia)
conferences dates back to 2003. PaPE 2021 is locally organized at Universitat
Pompeu Fabra and has the support of many research groups in other universities
in Barcelona (UB, UAB, UOC) working in the discipline of phonetics and
phonology.

We invite works aimed at exploring different disciplinary approaches to all
areas of phonetics and phonology, including interdisciplinary research which
investigate the sound properties of language from multiple perspectives:
neurolinguistics, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and speech
technologies. As such, PaPE strives to be a meeting place for researchers
from different perspectives and methodologies to exchange ideas, promote
further collaboration, and bridge the gap between these topics and
disciplines. In addition to the broad goals laid out above, this year’s PaPE
will also have a specific scientific aim, delving into the topic of “Phonetics
and Phonology: Real-world applications”. Therefore, while submissions related
to any area of phonetics and phonology are welcome, we particularly encourage
contributions dealing with –but not limited to– real-world applications of
phonetics and phonology within the domains of acquisition and teaching
research, multimodal communication, conversational avatars, and health and
clinical research.

Second Call for Papers:

PaPE 2021 will be the latest installment of the PaPE conference series, aimed
at exploring different disciplinary approaches to all areas of phonetics and
phonology, including interdisciplinary research which investigate the sound
properties of language from multiple perspectives: neurolinguistics,
psycholinguistics, computational linguistics and speech technologies. This
covers a variety of topics including:
 - Tone and intonation
 - Phonological theory
 - Audiovisual prosody and gesture
 - Language development
 - Linguistic typology
 - Language pathology
 - Language teaching
 - Speech Technology
 - Conversational Avatars

As such, PaPE strives to be a meeting place for researchers from different
perspectives and methodologies to exchange ideas, promote further
collaboration, and bridge the gap between these topics and disciplines.

The Barcelona edition of PaPE in 2021 is planned to be held from Monday 21 to
Wednesday 23 June 2021 at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona,
Catalonia. In addition to the broad goals laid out above, this year’s PaPE
will also have a specific scientific aim, delving into the topic of “Phonetics
and Phonology: Real-world applications”. Therefore, while submissions related
to any are of phonetics and phonology are welcome, we particularly encourage
contributions dealing with –but not limited to– real-world applications of
phonetics and phonology within the domains of acquisition and teaching
research, multimodal communication, conversational avatars, and health and
clinical research.

Abstracts should be written in English and not exceed one page of text (A4).
In addition, references, examples and/or figures can optionally be included on
a second page. If possible, use the MS Office Word template provided below. In
any case, please use Times New Roman font, size 12, 1 inch margins and single
spacing. Do not include author names or affiliations, and submit as
property-free PDF file using author names separated by underscores as filename
(e.g. smith_mueller_rossi_dejong.pdf).

Abstracts can be submitted until 30 November 2020, using the following
EasyChair link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=pape2021

Abstracts may be submitted either for a ‘talk/poster’, or as a ‘poster only’.
Authors may submit one abstract as first author and up to three abstracts as a
co-author. Please indicate upon submission if the first author has student
status. Choose at least three Keywords for your submission.

As with previous conferences in this series, selected papers will be published
in established journals in the field of phonetics and phonology.

A Word template for abstracts can be downloaded at our website at
https://pape2021.upf.edu/submission-information/

ATTENTION, PLEASE: The author/s name/s and affiliation/s have to be left blank
in the first version of the abstract (as it has to be anonymous for the
revision process). They will be inserted in the revised version, in case of
acceptance.

COVID UPDATE: The local organizing committee is planning on maintaining the
current dates for PaPE 2021 (June 21-23, 2021). Should the COVID health crisis
not allow us to organize PaPE safely, however, we are ready to switch the
conference to a hybrid or fully virtual event. The situation will continue to
be monitored and a final decision will be made before the registration date.
