Metaphor and Health:
Linguistic images in the sociocultural framing of illness, disease and the
body

Western societies in the 21st century are characterised by a looming
discouragement with scientific medicine. This insight is – however – thwarted
by a prominent and culturally deeply engrained dependence on and trust in
medicine that is conceived to provide answers to all sorts of medical problems
or conditions. Hence, medicine is characterised by an inherent tension ranging
from trust in new biomedical therapies to the preference of holistic
approaches as outlined in Chinese or alternative medicine. All these
approaches are based on various sociocultural and historically generated ideas
of illness, disease, the body, cures, therapies, prevention and ultimately
target health. The current imperative of health in western societies – to use
Deborah Lupton’s book title – permeates all areas of medicine and requires
critical inspection of what the notion of health actually represents.
Metaphorik.de therefore devotes an interdisciplinary issue to the topical
aspect of how metaphor and metonymies contribute to developing images and
frames of health in medical contexts.

We welcome contributions from the humanities, sociology, medical sociology,
anthropology, science and technology studies and the sciences that
theoretically and empirically engage with the role of metaphor and metonymy in
all sorts of medical and preventative contexts all over the globe.
Contributions can cover topics such as:

- the role of metaphor and metonymy in current and/or historical
conceptualisations of disease,
- the development of medical or pharmaceutical therapies and their underlying
imagery,
- images of gendered bodies in prevention and treatment,
- the metaphorically or metonymically conditioned ideas of health in all sorts
of medical approaches,
- current tendencies of biomedicalisation and their images,
- metaphorical concepts of genetic and metabolic health in genomic medicine,
- images used to legitimate medicalisation and disease mongering,
- metaphors in public and media representations of illness and disease
including blogs and other internet ressources,
- metaphors and metonymies in the management and framing of epidemics or
- the communicative role of metaphor and /or metonymy in patient-doctor
interaction.

This list is by no way exclusive and we are open to any other topic not
covered here. If you are interested, we kindly ask you to send an abstract
(12pt, Calibri, single-lined, all margins 2cm) of no more than one page
including the title of your contribution, its content and your contact details
to info at metaphorik.de.

Important Dates:
Deadline for abstract submissions: 15 October 2020
Notification of acceptance: mid-November 2020
Submission of the full paper: end of March 2021.
Publication of the special issue: autumn 2021.
