Subject: CfP Queer and Trans Dialectology: Exploring the Intersectionality of Regionality

Following the University of Kentucky webinar “Approaching a Queer
Dialectology” - co-sponsored by the Linguistic Society of America’s Committee
on LGBTQ+ [Z] Issues in Linguistics - American Speech, the journal of the
American Dialect Society, has expressed interest in a special issue proposal
on the same topic.

We are proposing a single special issue of American Speech, but if there is
considerable research/interest in collaborating on this project, then we have
discussed the possibilities of either a double-special issue or a volume of
PADS (Publications of the American Dialect Society). That is, the size and
length of the final version of this collection will depend on the number of
interested researchers and the number of papers that result from this call.

This is a call for papers for a collection of research writing on the
conceptualization of Queer & Trans approaches to Dialectology, specifically
surrounding the intersectionality of regionality. The call asks for abstracts
(750 words, not including references) to be returned by October 15. Reviews of
the abstracts will begin the following week, and authors should expect to hear
back within a month.

We would like to encourage submissions which consider region, regionality,
regional identity politics, and the variable ways that these interact with
identity, language use, variation, and change in trans and queer communities.
We are especially interested in papers whose research and results prompt
discussions of the complexity of region as it intersects with other dynamic
aspects of identity.

If you are interested in submitting your work to be included in the special
issue proposal, please send questions or expressions of interest to both
editors, Bryce McCleary (bryce.e.mccleary at okstate.edu) and Tyler Kibbey
(tyler.e.kibbey at gmail.com). We further request that those interested in
contributing the proposal submit a 750-word abstract (not including
references) and a CV to the editors. The deadline for abstract submission is
October 15, 11:59PM EDT.

Our goal is to submit a full proposal with short abstracts and a table of
contents to the editors of American Speech for timely review and consideration
by the end of October. Interested individuals will be notified by the editors
if their paper has been accepted for inclusion within the proposal. The
editors expect that, should the proposal be accepted and reviewed expediently,
full manuscript submissions will be due sometime in December, with the goal
being publication in early to mid- 2021.
