Description:

The Center for the Study of Language and Society (CSLS) at the University of
Bern invites applications for a 2-year full-time (100%) early postdoctoral
researcher position, to begin on 1 February 2021. The successful candidate
will work with CSLS Director, Professor Erez Levon, to collaboratively design
and conduct research on language variation, (elite) social class and
embodiment in Europe. The specific language/location to be researched will be
determined once the successful candidate has been appointed; preference will
be given to candidates who can conduct fieldwork and variationist analysis in
a language other than English. In addition to research work, the successful
candidate will also be expected to teach 1-2 MA courses per semester (2-4
hours/week) and to contribute to the life of the CSLS in a more general way,
for instance by undertaking appropriate administrative duties.

Applicants must have obtained a doctoral degree in sociolinguistics or a
closely related field within three years prior to the start of employment.
Expertise in sociolinguistic fieldwork and (quantitative) variationist methods
are essential, including the use of relevant software (e.g., ELAN, Praat, R).
Evidence of an existing research interest in language and social class,
language and embodiment and/or language and social meaning is highly
desirable, as is experience with teaching and project management. 

For research collaboration and publication purposes, candidates should have an
excellent command of written and spoken English. Teaching in the CSLS can take
place in English, German or French. The administrative language of the
University is German and Bern is a (Swiss)German-speaking city. Candidates who
do not already have competence in German should be prepared to acquire
functional German after arrival.

The position is full-time for 2 years, from 1 February 2021 - 31 January 2023.
The salary for the first year is 87’925.50 CHF (approximately 81’000 EUR /
95’000 USD). For the second year, the salary is subject to a modest rise, in
accordance with local government policy.
