STEP2021 - Spring Training in Experimental Psycholinguistics

Focus: The Spring School is directed at postdoctoral fellows, graduate and advanced undergraduate students, and anyone else interested in learning how to turn their research ideas into concrete steps towards experimental designs, data collection and analysis using advanced experimental and statistical methods.

Description:
Advancing the methodological skills and conceptual prowess of students of
linguistics and psycholinguistics since 2014, this year's STEP takes place
online and is completely FREE of charge. Confirmed courses include:

- Corpus-linguistic text processing with R – Stefan Th. Gries (UC Santa
Barbara & JLU Giessen) **Note that this course begins already on April 20th**

- Understanding nonlinearities in language and psycholinguistics: An
introduction to Generalized Additive Modeling – R. Harald Baayen, Yu-Ying
Chuang, and Peter Hendrix (Eberhard Karls)

- An introduction to vector space morphology and morphological processing
using linear discriminative learning (LDL) – R. Harald Baayen, Yu-Ying Chuang,
and Maria Heitmeier (Eberhard Karls)

- Psycholinguistic applications of NLP method for analyzing free-form texts –
Aki-Juhani Kyröläinen (McMaster)

- Communication: An in-the-body experience – Jennifer Hinnell (UBC) and Elena
Nicoladis (Alberta)

In addition, we will have two events organized in gathertown consisting of a
series of shorter talks/tutorials as well as *participant posters. The
following talks have been confirmed:

- Natural Language Processing to manage harmful content online – Maite Taboada
(Simon Fraser)

- How can EEG/ERPs be helpful in psycholinguistic research? – Sid Segalowitz
(Brock)

- Cognitively constrained models of pronoun processing – Margreet Vogelzang
(Cambridge)

- Written language production as a window to the mind – Gary Libben (Brock) 

*All participants are invited to prepare a poster presentation (voluntary). A
poster session has been scheduled to take place in gathertown (on May 19,
2021).
