আদি-অন্তহীন যে ব্রহ্ম জগতে বহুরূপে প্রকাশিত – শব্দতত্ত্ব তারই চিহ্ন। এমনটাই
বলেছিলেন ভর্তৃহরি। আর কোরানে কথিত, সৃষ্টিকে বিশেষিত করতেই আদমকে শিখতে হয়েছিল
নামবাচী শব্দ – ‘And HE taught Adam the names – all of them. The HE showed them
to the angles and said, “Inform ME of the names of these if you are
truthful”’। সত্তার পাশাপাশি, শব্দ তাই সত্য সংক্রান্তও। খ্রিস্টিয় ধারণাতেও শব্দ
চিহ্নের গুরুত্ব স্বীকৃত: “In the beginning was the word and the word was with
GOD, and the word was GOD”। বাইবেলের মূল গ্রীক সংস্করণে যদিও শব্দটা ছিলো
‘logos’, লাতিনে ‘verbum’, আর ইংরেজিতে ‘word’। ইংরেজি ‘word’ বা ‘sound’-এর
অর্থকে অতিক্রম করে যায় ‘শব্দ’।

শব্দের বিবিধ অর্থ সম্বলিত একটা নথি পেশ করেছিলেন হরিচরণ বন্দ্যোপাধ্যায় তার
বঙ্গীয় শব্দকোষে: শব্দ অর্থে ব্যাকরণে যেমন বিভক্তিহীন পদ বা প্রাতিপদিকের
অনুষঙ্গ এসে হাজির হয়, ঠিক তেমনি আপ্তজনের উপদেশের কথাও এসে উপস্থিত হয়:
আপ্তোপদেশঃ শব্দঃ (ন্যায়দর্শন)। শব্দ যেমন সংজ্ঞাবাচী, ঠিক তেমনি ধ্বনি বিষয়কও।
‘শব্দশক্তিজন্য জ্ঞান’-এর কথা যেমন বলা হয়, ঠিক তেমনি শব্দ হয়ে উঠতে পারে বাক
প্রয়োগরীতির বিষয়ও।

শব্দ সাধ্য। শব্দ সাধন। শব্দ বাক। শব্দই ভাষা। শব্দ অনুশাসনও। শব্দর অর্থ ব্যাপক:
শব্দর শরীরে জড়িয়ে থাকে সমাজ, সংস্কৃতি, ইতিহাস। শব্দর গঠনে ধরা থাকে মনের আদল। –
স্বাধীনতার আকুতি বা বিপন্নতার প্রসঙ্গটুকুও। শব্দ হয়ে ওঠে বিষয়। - অনুশাসনও।
শব্দ-সম্মেলনে তাই বিভিন্ন দৃষ্টিভঙ্গী থেকে ভাষার রূপরেখা বোঝার প্রয়াস।

ভাষা বিষয়ক আন্তর্জাতিক সম্মেলন, শব্দর প্রথম অধিবেশনের জন্য গবেষণাধর্মী কাজের
অন্যূন পাঁচশো শব্দের সারসংক্ষেপ আহ্বান করা হচ্ছে। সকলের জ্ঞাতার্থে সম্ভাব্য
বিষয়ের একটা তালিকা বিষয়সূচীতে দেওয়া থাকলো।
