Linguistic Field(s): Phonology; Pragmatics; Semantics; Syntax

Call Deadline: 01-Feb-2022

Meeting Description:

This workshop aims at exploring properties of non-canonical interrogatives in
different languages. By non-canonical interrogatives we mean interrogative
sentences that are not purely information seeking: rhetorical questions,
exclamatory interrogatives, surprise questions, interrogative requests, etc.
The study of non-canonical questions has only recently gained wider attention
from a variety of linguistic and methodological perspectives (e.g. Braun et
al. 2019, Farkas 2020, Brunetti et al. 2021, Celle et al. 2021, Celle &
Pélissier 2021, Hinterhöltzl & Munaro 2021, Trotzke & Czypionka in press).
This research has, however, barely scratched the surface of this multifaceted
topic.

The workshop is part of the annual conference of the Centre for Excellence in
Estonian Studies “Subjectivity and Intersubjectivity in Language and Culture”,
organised by the Estonian Literary Museum and the University of Tartu.

Call for Papers:

The workshop will focus on the phonetic, grammatical, lexical, semantic and
pragmatic features of non-canonical interrogatives and the interaction of
these features. We invite experimental, corpus-based and qualitative studies
on the following and other related topics:

- formal properties of non-canonical interrogatives, including phonological
and phonetic characteristics (e.g. pitch), lexical markers (e.g. particles),
grammatical markers (e.g. modality), information structure, syntactic
irregularities;
- types and comparison of non-canonical interrogatives in different languages
and contexts;
- speech acts conveyed by non-canonical interrogatives;
 - the relationship of speech act and sentence type;
- role of prosody in expressing indirect speech acts;
- non-canonical interrogatives and expressivity;
- theoretical approaches to non-canonical interrogatives.

The workshop is organised in the framework of the project EKKD10 ''The prosody
and information structure of surprise questions in Estonian in comparison with
other languages”, the French-Estonian cooperation programme G. F. Parrot
project “Surprise Questions from a Comparative Perspective”, and the Centre
for Excellence in Estonian Studies.

We invite 300-word abstracts (excluding references). The abstracts should
mention the name of the workshop. Abstract submission and registration form
are available here: https://www.kirmus.ee/en/CEES2022reg

IMPORTANT DATES:
February 1, 2022 – abstract submission deadline
March 1, 2022 – notification of acceptance of abstracts
May 12-13, 2022 – the conference and workshops
