Linguistic Field(s): Sociolinguistics

Call Deadline: 21-Jan-2022

Meeting Description:

The second Language Variation and Change in the South of England meeting will
take place on the 22nd April 2022, and will be hosted by the University of
Suffolk. We are also pleased to announce that the conference is being planned
in a hybrid format for those not able to attend in person (details to be
released soon).

Our understanding of the nature of sociolinguistic variability in the South of
England is still in its relative infancy compared to other regions of the
country. Therefore, this meeting aims to bring together scholars in the field
of language variation and change who take a quantitative approach to
sociolinguistics in order to examine the linguistic and social factors which
influence variation, be they phonetic, morphosyntactic, discourse-pragmatic
and/or lexical features.

If you are currently conducting research, or have research interests in this
geographical area, we would like to invite you to submit an abstract of no
longer than 300 words (excluding references) for a 20min presentation relating
to language variation and change in the South of England. The meeting has been
designed to have a workshop nature, hence both informal
presentations/discussions about ongoing research bearing on the issue of
variation in the South of England, and conference-style research presentations
are appropriate.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact us at
LVCsouth at uos.ac.uk

We look forward to welcoming you to Ipswich in April!

Kindest regards

Jenny Amos (University of Suffolk) and Christian Ilbury (University of
