Meeting Description:

The Department of English Studies at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid is pleased
to announce the First International Conference on the Asturian language. The
aim of this conference is to gather at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid
scholars, researchers, and other academics who work on the Asturian language.
The conference focuses primarily on the distinctive grammatical (e.g. phonetic
& phonological, morphosyntactic, lexical, semantic, or pragmatic) properties
of the Asturian language, the characteristics of the Asturian cultural
identity, and their relationship with the issue of officiality. However,
contributions dealing with the Asturian language from any perspective (e.g.
sociolinguistic, literary, historical, educational, economic, political, etc.)
will also be more than welcomed.

The Asturian language (Western Romance) is considered endangered by UNESCO,
mainly due to the strong influence that Castilian has had in the region since
the 14th. century. In order to revert the situation, the Asturian-speaking
community has worked hard for the preservation and revitalization of their
local language and has sought its official recognition for decades but the
process is not being easy. This conference therefore intends to offer a
general overview of the long and arduous process of preservation and
revitalization of the Asturian language, placing special emphasis on the
objections and criticism that have hampered its success and the recognition of
this language as official. After such a long time, the conclusion is that no
matter how hard Asturian people work for the protection and preservation of
their traditional language because without the support of the political forces
it is impossible to revitalize it. With the publication of Normes
Ortográfiques del Asturianu (1981), Gramática de la Llingua Asturiana (1998),
Diccionariu de la Llingua Asturiana (2000) and Diccionariu Etimolóxicu de la
Llingua Asturiana (2018), the normativization of the language is completed
according to the Academia de la Llingua Asturiana but people working for the
preservation and revitalization of the Asturian language consider that, in
order to ensure its survival, it deserves and needs to be recognized as
official. They defend that the Asturian language deserves a similar treatment
to that of other regional languages in Spain, such as Basque, Catalan,
Galician, and Valencian, which have achieved official status. More and more
Asturian people understand and support the idea that Asturian, as any other
language in the world, is an intangible heritage worth preserving and
achieving its official status is crucial to ensure its survival. The
officiality of the Asturian language would bring not only considerable
economic benefit to the region but also an official recognition of its
cultural heritage Asturian officialdom, a dream that has lasted for decades
but that is now closer than ever to becoming a reality.

We invite 20-minute (plus 10-minute discussion) presentation proposals on the
