Subject: From Sketching to Mindmaps : The Use of Visuals in Teaching and Learning English

In a language class, students and teachers use a wide range of visuals to
support their thinking or to keep a record of their current and previous
projects. These can consist of hand-written notes, diagrams, pictures or
specific forms of text document such as plans or mind maps.

They can either be provided for students (taken from text books or other
teaching ressources), created by the teacher or they can be made by the
students spontaneously or at the suggestion of the teacher. This wide range of
visual documents which we call ‘pictorial representations’ can include
sketches, drawings, photos, images, flashcards, plans, mind maps, pictograms,
etc. Their importance in the teaching and learning process is not
sufficiently recognised either in the classroom or in language learning
research from primary school up to university.

The aim of this issue of ‘Recherche et pratiques pédagogiques en langues de
spécialité’ - Cahiers de l’APLIUT is to collect studies into the contribution
of these pictorial representations in the teaching and learning of English as
well as their use in teacher training.

Submissions, in either English or French, can be :
- articles : 25000-40000 characters maximum (not including spaces), without
summary or key words
- research projects :10000-20000 characters (not including spaces), without
summary or key words
- feedbacks in the form of educational university notes : 10000-20000
characters maximum (not including spaces) without summary or key words
- educational sheets : 8000-15000 characters maximum (not including spaces)
without summary or key words
- reviews : 8000-15000 characters maximum (not including spaces)
