Description:

The Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) at Heidelberg
University invites applications for a position starting on 15th March 2021, or
as soon as possible thereafter.

1 Doctoral Researcher - Political Science / Middle East Studies / Berber
Studies (E 13 TV-L, 65%, 24+12 months)

The position is advertised within the research group “Gathering the Dispersed.
State Evasion and State-making in Modern Jewish, Kurdish, and Berber History”.
Funded by the Volkswagen Foundation, “Gathering the Dispersed” explores a
comparative perspective on modern state-making policies in three non-state
communities: Jews, Kurds and Berbers. In all three cases, nationalist
movements launched ambitious campaigns of centralizing power, resources and
populations with the goal of nation-building and state-building. However,
these campaigns of state-making clashed with a pattern of state evasion and
autonomous self-rule, marked by dispersed patterns of social authority,
cultural practices, and human settlement. Based on a comparative case study of
modern Jewish, Kurdish, and Berber history, the research group aims at
establishing a typological theory of the contested transition from state
evasion to state-making in non-state communities.

For the advertised positions, candidates are expected to conduct field
research and archival research both in the MENA and Berber/Amazigh communities
in Europe. Qualified applicants are expected to have obtained excellent
degrees in Political Science, Middle East Studies, or Berber Studies
(including a linguistic focus). They should demonstrate advanced skills and
experience in qualitative methods of empirical social research
(semi-structured interviews, discourse analysis). Very good spoken and written
English are required. Additional requirements can be specified as follows:

- For the position as doctoral researcher, candidates should have a
specialization in modern Berber/Amazigh politics, history, or linguistics.
French and a spoken Berber/Amazigh dialect are required, knowledge of the
neo-Tifinagh script is an advantage.

Applicants will be employed at the Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies
and will be associate researchers at the Department of Middle Eastern and
Islamic Studies.

Applications should include: a letter of interest, a CV with a list of
publications, diplomas, a writing sample (MA chapter acceptable), and the
names and contact details of two potential referees.

For further information and for your application (in one PDF), please get in
touch with Johannes Becke (johannes.becke at hcts.uni-heidelberg.de). Deadline is
February 15 2021, online interviews will be conducted in late February 2021.

Heidelberg University is an equal opportunity employer and all qualified
applicants will be considered. In an effort to increase the number of women,
applications by female researchers are especially encouraged. Preference will
be given to disabled applicants with equal qualifications. Information on
policies for personal data according to Art. 13 DS-GVO can be found at our
homepage https://www.uni-heidelberg.de/datenschutz_personal.
