Meeting Description:

We are pleased to announce that the 2021 annual conference of the Linguistic
Association of Canada and the United States will be held ONLINE, July 19-23,
2021, and will be hosted by the Department of World Languages and Cultures,
The University Toledo, Toledo, Ohio. Invited speakers will be announced later.

The conference theme is Communicating in the Time of Coronavirus.

The following list of topics is intended as suggestive rather than
comprehensive or restrictive.
 - Environmental linguistics
 - Sociolinguistics
 - Ethnolinguistics
 - Context and meaning
 - International communication
 - Group interactions in different settings, including Online communication
 - Political discourse
 - Discourse and social distancing
 - Speaking and hearing under stress
 - Personal / media bias in communication
 - Anything else in general / historical linguistics

The Ruth Brend Fund provides financial support to help defray costs of
attending LACUS meetings for members from countries with weak currencies.  The
Presidents' Prize Fund helps pay for prizes awarded to the best student and
post-doctoral papers presented at each annual LACUS conference.

The Presidents' Prize, which includes a cash award of US $500, is awarded to
the most outstanding paper presented at a LACUS conference by a younger
scholar.
 - All conference registration will be online, none ''on-site'' as the
conference will be virtual.
 - All sessions will be plenary (one at a time) over the five days of the
conference.
 - Registered participants will receive access to all sessions via Cisco
Webex.
Participants will be able to access sessions via Webex (free download) or a
web browser

Local Organizing Committee: 
Douglas W. Coleman (English, Emeritas), Raj Nagisetty (Director, For. Lang.
Learning Ctr.), Gaby Semaan (Arabic), Kasumi Yamazaki (Japanese), all from the
UT Department of World Languages and Cultures.


Call for Papers: 

Abstracts must be submitted online. The abstract submission page, with
guidelines, including a detailed schedule for abstract submissions, can be

Important Dates:   
The following is the planned timeline for LACUS 2021.  Authors of abstracts
submitted by March 31, 2021 will be informed of its acceptance or rejection by
May 3. 
 - 31 MARCH 2021:  Final abstract submission deadline
 - 3 MAY 2021: Notification of acceptance / rejection of submissions
 - 17 MAY 2021: Deadline for receipt of confirmation of attendance from
presenters
 - 14 JUNE 2021: Deadline for receipt of presenter registration and membership
fees 
 - 25 JUNE 2021: Preliminary program available on-line
 - 19-23 JULY 2021: LACUS Conference

Presenters are required to be members of LACUS and to be registered for the
conference. Regardless of acceptance status, anyone who has not registered and
paid registration and membership fees by June 14, 2021 will not have their
paper scheduled on the program.
