Applications are invited from world-leading researchers for the Chair in
Natural Language Processing in the School of Informatics at the University of
Edinburgh. This is a full-time open-ended appointment at the rank of
professor.

Natural Language processing is a highly interdisciplinary field of research,
encompassing methods and insights from Computer Science, AI, Linguistics,
Psychology and Cognitive Science.  It covers a wide range of linguistic
phenomena and applications, including, among others: speech processing,
syntactic and semantic parsing, text-to-text and concept-to-text generation,
dialogue systems, human robot interaction, and multimodal processing of
language and vision and embodied conversation.

The School of Informatics is seeking to extend its teaching and research in
natural language processing. Candidates with an interest in machine
translation and/or multimodal NLP (e.g., language and vision) are particularly
encouraged to apply, but applicants in all areas of NLP will be considered.

The School of Informatics is one of the top places in the world for research
in natural language processing, and benefits from strong links to the School
of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences (PPLS), the School of Social
and Political Science (SSPS), and the Institute for Design Informatics, which
bridges the School of Informatics and Edinburgh College of Art. The School of
Informatics and PPLS run Edinburgh’s UKRI Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT)
in NLP. This post has been created to reinforce Edinburgh's strength in NLP
and to foster inter-disciplinary research, knowledge exchange and teaching.

We are now seeking a world-leading researcher who will take a leadership role
in both research and teaching NLP at Edinburgh. The successful candidate will
have a vision for how to develop NLP both as a field and within the Edinburgh
ecosystem.  As well as providing research leadership in and beyond the School
of Informatics, the Chair will contribute to postgraduate teaching,
undergraduate courses, curriculum development and the supervision of PhD
students, in particular taking a leading role in the UKRI CDT in NLP.

Your skills and attributes for success:
- PhD qualification.
- Experience as an established and internationally leading academic in an area
related to natural language processing.
- A demonstrable sustained track record of attracting substantial research
funding as a leading independent researcher.
- A strong track record of first author and collaborative publications in high
quality journals and international conferences, demonstrating a world-leading
research reputation and profile.
- Strong research skills and deep knowledge in specialist area; broad
knowledge of the natural language processing research landscape.
