Focus and Program: 
The KU Leuven winter school on Mobile Eye-Tracking in (Inter)action is a 3-day event that aims at PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with limited to no experience with mobile eye-tracking technology. The course, which will take place from 19 to 21 January 2022, consists of:
- Interactive lectures offering an introduction to mobile eye-tracking technology as well as an overview of existing research using this paradigm for (multimodal) interaction studies. We will pay particular attention to the potential of mobile eye-tracking for the study of key topics in interaction research, like turn-taking, shared/joint attention, grounding, etc.
- Ample opportunities to discuss (future) research plans with fellow students and experts in the field. We are particularly pleased that three international experts have accepted our invitation to be part of this winter school:
- Judith Holler (Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen & Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics)
- Peter Auer (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg & MobEyeLab Freiburg)
- Roy Hessels (Universiteit Utrecht)

- Hands-on training in the use of mobile eye-tracking systems and (open-source) analysis software
- A group project, taking the participants through the different stages of an eye-tracking study

- You want to have hands-on training in state-of-the-art software for annotation and analysis of eye-tracking data? 

Then this winter school may be something for you!

Background and aim of the training:
The use of eye-tracking technology for studying eye movement patterns and gaze behaviour has gained steady ground in a variety of (sub)fields in linguistics, communication studies and cognitive science over the last decades. This increased interest has been fostered by the development of unobtrusive and mobile eye-tracking systems, which has opened up new avenues of research on eye gaze behavior in naturalistic, dynamic and highly interactive settings, in addition to the traditional lab-based eye-tracking experiments. 

In this winter school, we deal with the use of mobile (or head-mounted) eye-tracking systems, which are wearable devices typically in the form of eye-tracking glasses worn by participants while they are engaged in an (interactive) task. Using this type of wearable recording device offers a huge potential for studying eye gaze ‘in the wild’ but also comes with particular challenges, which we will tackle in this training. More specifically, we will zoom in on the possibilities of using mobile eye-tracking for studies in (multimodal) interaction analysis, including face-to-face interaction and (user-centered) human-computer interaction. 

Next to offering an overview of existing research using this technology, we will provide the participants with practical and hands-on advice on each step of the process in conducting a mobile eye-tracking study, starting with the general research design, over data collection and analysis to the visualization of results. During the winter school, participants will have an opportunity to talk about their own ongoing (or planned) research and work on a real-life case study using state-of-the-art eye-tracking hardware and software.
