Call Deadline: 15-Aug-2021

Meeting Description:

The workshop ''Literal and Figurative Meanings of Compounds'' will take place
in the context of the 44th Annual Conference of the German Linguistic Society
(DGfS - Deutsche Gesellschaft für Sprachwissenschaft) at Tuebingen University
from February 23 to 25, 2022.

Compounds pose a particular problem for semantics since the relation between
their two constituents allows a wide if not infinite range of possible
interpretations. In addition, compounds constitute a frequently used structure
for metaphor formation. Both the general principles for compound
interpretation and the semantics of metaphors are domains that are currently
stimulating much research and converge in the topic of this workshop. Both
strands of research have meanwhile developed advanced research methods. The
investigation of compound semantics is increasingly based on the analysis of
large corpora and lexical databases and on psycholinguistic experiments.
Research on metaphor attracts growing attention from computerlinguistics /
machine learning.

Call for Papers:

The workshop aims at gathering researchers from different areas to explore how
recent theoretical and methodological advances in compound and metaphor
research provide answers to the following questions:
1. How do figurative in contrast to literal meanings of compounds arise and
how does compound semantics interact with metaphor semantics?
2. How do compounds differ from their syntactic counterparts semantically
(e.g. N-N compounds vs. attributive genitive constructions, A-N compounds vs.
A-N phrases), what factors affect the choice between compounds and phrases,
and how does this relate to the assumption of a fundamental division of labor
between syntax and morphology, namely that phrases are used to provide
descriptions and compounds to name concepts?
3. In how far do formal-semantic/pragmatic and rule-based approaches on the
one hand and pattern-, analogy-, or construction-based approaches on the other
hand provide explanations for compound and metaphor formation and
interpretation?
4. What empirical methods can provide insights into the formation of novel
metaphorical compounds?
