Summary of the special issue

Accepting the view that ‘disciplinary culture’ (Mauranen, 1993) has an impact
on how the communication is achieved via rhetorical choices in particular
discourse communities, this special issue aims at bringing together empirical
analyses of metadiscourse as linguistic and rhetorical resources in a
disciplinary context or across disciplinary settings. Articles taking an
either integrative or non-integrative approach to metadiscourse (Ädel &
Mauranen, 2010; Hyland, 2018) are all welcome, but the focus is on the
comparison between the ways how metadiscourse resources are used to construct
linguistic meanings and achieve communicative purposes by
writers/speakerseither from different linguistic backgrounds or across
disciplinary contexts. Centrally, the goal of the issue is to augment the
current body of knowledge about how metadiscourse serves as a vehicle for
communication and negotiates linguistic and rhetorical meanings in the
production and conveyance of disciplinary knowledge.
