Meeting Description:

The Center for Languages and Intercultural Communication at Rice University
invites you to submit a proposal to 6th CLIC (Online) Conference “After COVID:
Language, Diversity, and Social Justice.” The 6th CLIC Conference invites
researchers and practitioners to reflect on experiences and consequences of
the health crisis caused by a world-wide pandemic and its effects on issues of
social justice and diversity in the teaching of second languages and
multilingualism in general. Through the lens of language analysis, we seek to
understand (a) the renewed interest in multilingualism and second language
learning in an increasingly multimodal communication environment (e.g., new
media and technology) and, in turn, (b) how this new perspective on
language/multilingualism can have an effect on second language learning and
teaching practices. The conference will be held virtually on June 18-19, 2021.

The plenary speakers are Dr. Ron Darvin (The Chinese University of Hong Kong,
Hong Kong), Dr. Suzanne Garcia-Mateus (California State University Monterey
Bay, USA), Dr. Terry A. Osborn (University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee,
USA) and Dr. Jayoung Song (Pennsylvania State University, USA). More

Final Call for Papers: 

Papers submitted for consideration can focus on any of a variety of topics
related to the overarching theme of the conference. The following represent
just a sample of possible themes that we hope will be addressed in this
conference:

1. How has language teaching evolved due to the pandemic?
2. What impact should the dynamic use of social media to prompt social justice
have on second language learning/teaching practices?
3. How could the experience of recent movements for social justice (e.g.,
#MeToo, #BlackLivesMatter, and many others) become a catalyst for pedagogical
design in the L2 classroom?
4. How does social media and the pervasive use of technology/mobile devices
influence interpersonal and professional communication?
5. What are the possibilities to increase participation in study abroad
programs that are accessible to all students in the after-COVID-19 era?
6. What are the consequences of the world-wide health crisis on creating and
sustaining personal relationships and managing professional communication in
multilingual environment?
7. The experience of migrants on language development and linguistic
empowerment

Deadline: Your submission should be sent to CLIC-conferences at rice.edu as an
email attachment by April 1, 2021.

Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words, double spaced. They should be
clearly written and concisely address the following: Context of the issues(s)
researched or discussed; Purpose of the study, theoretical discussion, or
development project; Summary of the approach, methodology, or analytical
procedures used; Results, outcomes, or conclusions; and Implications and/or
significance to the field. 

Types of Presentations:
Posters: This format is best for works in progress and for presenters who want
more interaction with the audience. There will be 3 minutes for presentation
and 15 minutes for presentation and discussion.  Presenters will be asked to
submit their posters in a pdf or slide format.

Papers: This format is best for more complete projects. Speakers will have 20
minutes to present their papers, followed by 10 minutes for questions and
comments from the audience. Presenters will be encouraged to video record
their presentations in advance to be posted to the website.
