Subject: CLOx for macOS: A Free Application for Automated Orthographic Transcription of Recorded Audio

We are excited to announce the release of the macOS version of CLOx, a free
application developed by the University of Washington Sociolinguistics
Laboratory. Using Apple's automatic speech recognition engine, CLOx
orthographically transcribes sociolinguistic or other recorded audio
interviews in a format amenable to linguistic analysis. The macOS version can
be downloaded from the App Store at
https://apps.apple.com/app/apple-store/id1523222131?pt=118058216&ct=LingList&m
t=8. The web version, which uses Microsoft's Speech service for transcription,
remains available to users of all platforms, at
https://clox.ling.washington.edu, and is actively maintained.

CLOx for Mac allows users to output transcriptions in a .csv format with
timestamps indicating the start and end time of each word or phrase in an
audio file. It can also create transcriptions in .txt format without
timestamps. Additionally, users can edit transcriptions in the app before
exporting. It is estimated that CLOx for Mac enables accurate transcription of
a sociolinguistic interview to be completed in one-fifth or less of the time
it would take to produce a manual transcription. The macOS version currently
supports 35 languages, and offers dialect support for several of these
languages.
