Columbia School Linguistic Society
Research Fellowship
Request for new proposals for the 2021-2022 academic year March 2021

For the coming 2021-2022 academic year the Columbia School Linguistic Society
(henceforth the Society) is considering fellowship proposals from applicants
who will be mentored by a member of the Society. Applicants do not have to be
members of the Society to apply, but Mentors must be.
The successful applicant for the Research Fellowship (the Fellow) will
undertake a linguistic research project from the perspective of Columbia
School linguistics (CS), under the guidance of a Mentor who is a member of the
Society. The research project undertaken by the Fellow will address a
grammatical, lexical, or phonological problem of the Fellow’s choice.

The new Fellow will receive a stipend of between $5,000 to $10,000 for the
period covering from September 1, 2021 to August 31, 2022. The Fellow’s
stipend is calculated on the basis of a 12-month calendar year. Assuming
satisfactory progress in the judgment of the Mentor and of the Society’s
Executive Committee, stipend payments will be made on a quarterly basis by the
Society. The Fellowship includes paid membership in the Society for 2021 and
2022.

The application consists of statements relating to the analytical problem,
existing analyses if any, and details on any progress the analyst has made to
date. The application is not to exceed 10 double-spaced pages written in
12-point font. Mentors should review applications prior to submission.
In addition, the application should include the applicant's CV, including
email address and the name of the applicant’s institution.
The deadline for receipt of new proposals is May 31, 2021. Proposals will be
reviewed by members of the Society’s Executive Committee, assisted by such
additional reviewers as they may deem appropriate. The Society will make every
effort to notify applicants by the end of June 2021. The application must be
submitted to the Society’s Administrative Manager Cara Schiff at
admin at csling.org

Requirements of the Fellowship:

The Fellow is expected to be an active supporter of the Society in all
activities pursuant to its mission.
The Fellow is expected to take the initiative to actively seek out the mentor
during the year of the Fellowship, consulting with the mentor on a regular
basis on all aspects of the project.
The Fellow is expected to participate on a regular basis in the bi-monthly
Society Seminar.
The Fellow is invited to be the lead presenter in at least one Society Seminar
during the 2021-2022 academic year. In addition, each Fellow is expected to
hold at least one pro-seminar each semester, to include their mentor and at
least two other invited Seminar members, chosen by the Fellow in consultation
with their mentor. These pro-seminars should be devoted to consultation
regarding ongoing analysis and work in progress.
At the end of the fellowship year, the Fellow is expected to provide a written
progress report detailing the state of the analysis. The report should be
presented in the format of an academic paper suitable for publication. It
should be prepared following standard academic format relying on the LSA style
sheet, and submitted to the Society (admin at csling.org).

Either during or after the Fellowship period, the Fellow is expected to make
every effort to publish results in a recognized academic venue. Publications
resulting from the Fellowship should acknowledge the support of the Society
and copies should be sent to the Society’s Administrative Director
