Job Location: Msida, Malta

Job Title: Resident Academic Full Time Post in Computational Linguistics
Job Rank: Rank Open

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

Applications are invited for a Full-Time Resident Academic Post in Computational Linguistics at the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology of the University of Malta. The appointment will be offered on a definite contract basis of one year, which can be renewed depending on available funds, subject to a probationary period of six months.

The post is linked to the undergraduate B.Sc. degree programme in Human Language Technology, the European MSc In Human Language Science & Technology (Erasmus Mundus LCT), as well as to the eventual development of a taught M.Sc. in Language Sciences, which will train graduate students in both theoretical and data-driven approaches to the study of language.

Candidates must be in possession of a Ph.D. or equivalent research-based doctorate in Computational Linguistics, or a related discipline, and have a demonstrable commitment to research that involves linguistic data. Teaching experience at tertiary level will be considered an asset.

The appointee will be required to contribute to the teaching and supervision of students, research and administrative duties, as well as outreach activities as may be required by the Institute and/or the University. More specifically, s/he will be required to teach courses on Natural Language Processing at all levels to students within the Institute of Linguistics and Language Technology and to students in other Departments/Institutes/Centres that make use of courses offered by the Institute. While not a requirement for this post, an ability to teach courses in more traditional areas of linguistics will be considered an asset. In addition, the appointee will be required to contribute to the development of the research programmes of the Institute; therefore, knowledge of the local linguistic situation and, in particular, in relation to the development of language resources for use in this context would be desirable. Good communicative skills, the ability to work in a team, and a
strong willingness to engage in the Institute’s administrative and outreach activities are also essential.
