Meeting Description: 

“Indigenous Awareness Month: endangered Nawat culture and language” is an
international project organized by the students of the “Cultures of the Global
South” M.A. program in the University of Tübingen. To celebrate indigenous
knowledge, we will be meeting each other every Thursday in July at a number of
online events on the topics of indigenous awareness, cultural patrimony and
Nawat language in Latin America. The aims of this project are to interest more
people in the problems of indigenous culture’s endangerment, specifically when
it comes to small groups on the verge of extinction; to underline the
importance of maintaining the life of the Nawat culture; to help reinforcing
activism connected to the revival of Nawat language in the society. 

What makes this event special is the involvement of speakers not only from
academia, but activists, workers of NGOs, employers of humanitarian
organizations, and indigenous people, so that they could speak for themselves.
These discussions would be interesting for everyone, regardless of the level
of knowledge and education, because they present an opportunity to connect
with a diverse international audience and widen intellectual horizons.
Throughout this month various formats of events, such as round tables, keynote
speeches, masterclasses, discussions, and project presentations, will take
place. Moreover, interdisciplinarity is a vital part of the forum, so material
on linguistics, architecture, ethnology, moviemaking, and, surely, cultural
studies, is to be presented.

“Mes de la conciencia indígena: cultura y lengua nawat en peligro de
extinción” es un proyecto internacional organizado por los estudiantes del
programa de maestría “Culturas del Sur Global” en la Universidad de Tübingen.
Para celebrar el conocimiento indígena, nos reuniremos todos los jueves de
julio en una serie de eventos en línea para tratar temas relacionados con la
conciencia indígena, el patrimonio cultural y el idioma nawat en América
Latina. Los objetivos de este proyecto se centran en lograr el interés de más
personas acerca de la problemática y el peligro en el que se encuentra la
cultura indígena, específicamente cuando se trata de pequeños grupos al borde
de la extinción; buscamos resaltar la importancia de mantener con vida la
cultura nawat; buscamos también ayudar a reforzar el activismo relacionado con
el resurgimiento del idioma nawat en la sociedad.

Lo que hace que este evento sea especial es la participación de ponentes no
sólo de la academia, sino también activistas, miembros de ONG, integrantes de
organizaciones humanitarias y pueblos indígenas, para que puedan hablar desde
su propia experiencia. Estas discusiones serían interesantes para todos,
independientemente del nivel de conocimiento y educación, porque representan
una oportunidad para conectarse con una audiencia internacional diversa y
ampliar los horizontes intelectuales. A lo largo de este mes se llevarán a
cabo diversos formatos de eventos, como mesas redondas, conferencias
magistrales, clases magistrales, debates y presentaciones de proyectos.
Además, la interdisciplinariedad es una parte vital del foro, por lo que se
presentará material sobre lingüística, arquitectura, etnología, cinematografía
y, seguramente, estudios culturales.
