Subject: Pragmatics; Psycholinguistics; Semantics; Sociolinguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics: PhD, Universität Stuttgart, Germany

 Institution/Organization: Universität Stuttgart
Department: Institute of Linguistics: English
Web Address: https://www.ling.uni-stuttgart.de/institut/ifla/

Level: PhD

Specialty Areas: Pragmatics; Psycholinguistics; Semantics; Sociolinguistics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Description:

Prof. Dr. Judith Tonhauser from the Department of English Linguistics at the
University of Stuttgart invites applications for a four-year Ph.D. student
position starting on October 1, 2021 (or soon thereafter). The position is
remunerated according to the TV-L pay scale, specifically at 65% of E13:
https://lbv.landbw.de/-/tabellenentgelt-ab-01-01-2017-neu.

Research in Judith Tonhauser's group focuses on natural language meaning,
especially projective content, questions, discourse and information structure,
and social meaning. There is a strong emphasis on empirical research, with
data being collected in fieldwork, through experiments, and from corpora. The
group has strong ties to other groups in the Institute of Linguistics
(https://www.ling.uni-stuttgart.de/en/) and to groups in the Institute for
Natural Language Processing (https://www.ims.uni-stuttgart.de/en/).

The Ph.D. student is expected to develop a dissertation project on projective
content: for background information, see, e.g.,
https://muse.jhu.edu/article/503025 or
https://academic.oup.com/jos/article/35/3/495/5042798. The dissertation
project will be grounded in the formal semantic/pragmatic literature on the
topic, but may intersect with and apply methods from other areas of research,
such as syntax, prosody, sociolinguistics, computational linguistics, or
psycholinguistics. The project will have a strong empirical component, that
is, it will be based on data collected in fieldwork, through experiments, or
from corpora, depending on the abilities and interests of the successful
candidate. Research on languages less well-represented in research on natural
language meaning is particularly welcome.

The teaching load is one course per semester. Courses in the department are
taught in English.

Students from international backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Knowledge of
German is not required. Support for conference travel and research expenses is
available.

The University of Stuttgart aims at increasing the number of women in
academia. Therefore, women are particularly encouraged to apply. Applications
of severely disabled candidates with equivalent qualifications will be given
priority.

Application requirements:
- M.A. or M.Sc. degree in linguistics or a related field (degree in hand by
October 1, 2021 or soon thereafter)
- Strong background in formal semantics/pragmatics
- Experience with any of the following is considered a plus: fieldwork, corpus
methods, experimental methods, statistical analysis, programming skills

Applications should include the following:
- Cover letter, with the names of 2-3 individuals willing to write a letter of
recommendation
- CV
- Statement of purpose (about 2 pages) that provides details on the
applicant's course work, research experience, and research interests
- University course transcripts
- Representative writing sample (e.g., seminar paper, B.A. thesis or M.A.
thesis) in English, German, French, or Spanish
- Copy of M.A. or M.Sc. degree certificate (if already available)

Please send your application by June 19, 2021 as a single PDF to
judith.tonhauser at ling.uni-stuttgart.de with the subject "Application to Ph.D.
position".
