Description:

The Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures (EALC) at Indiana
University welcomes applicants to our PhD Program in Chinese and PhD Program
in Japanese, which offer specialization in Experimental East Asian Linguistics
and East Asian Psycholinguistics (https://ealc.indiana.edu/graduate/phd.html).
We look for PhD students who have background in linguistics, cognitive
science, or East Asian studies, and are interested in using experimental and
corpus methods to study the psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, and
acquisition of East Asian languages. EALC houses two experimental linguistics
labs: the Language and Cognition Lab (https://lacl.sitehost.iu.edu) and the
Asia-Pacific Language Experimentation Lab (https://nozomitanaka.com/aplelab/).
Interested applicants should contact Prof. Charles Lin (chichlin at indiana.edu)
and Prof. Nozomi Tanaka (tanakan at indiana.edu) for further information.

Graduate students accepted to this program will build their academic
foundation through courses offered in EALC, General/Computational Linguistics,
Cognitive Sciences, Psychology, Second Language Studies, and Language
Education at Indiana University. Language sciences at Indiana University are
made of a vibrant community of researchers and faculty members in various
departments on campus. Admitted students will join this vibrant and welcoming
community of language scientists.

We offer five-year funding packages to the top PhD applicants, which include
two years of PhD fellowships and three years of assistantships. The funding
typically includes tuition remissions, a monthly stipend, and health
insurance. Students receive additional academic training through being
Associate Instructors of Chinese/Japanese language courses or content courses.
The Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies can also provide
funding opportunities through the Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS)
Fellowships (https://hls.indiana.edu/academics/scholarships/flas.html) for
domestic students.

The deadline for international as well as domestic applications is December
15, 2021. Admission information:
