Description:

The Department of English at Mississippi State University invites applications
for a tenure-track position for an assistant professor specializing in
phonetics, phonology, or sociophonetics to begin August 16, 2022. Primary
teaching responsibilities will include courses in phonetics, phonology, and
general linguistics. The candidate will have the opportunity to teach other
courses in the curriculum and to develop new courses in their area of
specialization. The research focus is open, but scholars of languages and
language varieties of the U.S. South are particularly encouraged to apply.

The successful candidate will carry a 2/2 teaching assignment in the first
year and a 3/2 (or 2/3) load in subsequent years. The candidate will have
access to the department’s Linguistics Research Laboratory. Publications and
professional service are required for tenure and promotion.

Our department has committed to sustained antiracist work in areas including
hiring, curricula, pedagogy, and the recruitment and retention of students,
faculty, and staff. This search is one of three departmental hires this year
(also including creative writing and professional writing), which we hope will
help us rethink our curriculum, leading to more inclusive pedagogy across the
department.

Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate
in Linguistics or a closely related field (or ABD with degree completed by
August 15, 2022), as well as college teaching experience. Salary and rank will
be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion,
ethnicity, sex (including pregnancy and gender identity), national origin,
disability status, age, sexual orientation, genetic information, protected
veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. We always
welcome nominations and applications from women, members of any minority
group, and others who share our passion for building a diverse community that
reflects the diversity in our student population.

Interested candidates must submit an application online via the application
link below along with a cover letter describing their interest in the
position, their CV, and contact information for at least three (3) references.
