Meeting Description: 

In March 2020, almost a year and half ago, the spread of COVID-19 forced the
world to a standstill. Our initial days were spent fervently learning about
the virus and the ways to protect ourselves. Simultaneously, we witnessed the
ravages of misinformation (conspiracy theories, anti-vax, anti-mask movements,
etc.) and resulting violence against health-care workers. Moreover, the rise
of unemployment and the subsequent increase in economic disparity forced us to
confront issues such as the re-emergence of racism, communalism, domestic
violence, systemic brutality against marginalized communities, mass migration
of laborers, challenges of working from remote locations and the burnout
induced by the collapse of boundaries between personal and professional lives,
among others. These severe economic upheavals and struggles for livelihood
were accompanied by the overwhelming task of documenting, understanding, and
coping with isolation, grief, and loss amidst unrelenting tragedy. On the
academic front, educational institutes were forced to function online and
shift to hybrid modes of teaching, learning, and research. Apart from
drastically altering the classroom experience for both students and teachers,
Zoom, Google, and MS Teams Classrooms ensured an overall increase in
audio-visual learning. A learner-centric approach combined with creative and
innovative teaching practices have facilitated the effectiveness of online
teaching-learning experiences. However, it cannot be forgotten that in a
country where seamless internet connectivity is a luxury available to only a
limited portion of the nation’s populace, continuous education has been the
privilege of only a few. Owing to economic constraints, we have witnessed a
significant increase in student enrollment in government schools, but the
effectiveness of the learning environment remains unknown. In the light of the
Government of India’s rollout of its new National Education Policy (NEP) which
promises to usher in radical changes towards the country’s educational
approach, the need to contemplate on the future of educational practices,
especially with the benefit of hindsight (post-pandemic), assumes utmost
urgency. This conference aims to bring together academicians, researchers,
policy makers and activists to share their experience and knowledge gained
from the pandemic. By collating their perspectives, we intend to weigh and
consider the lessons that the pandemic has to offer us and re-imagine the ways
in which disciplines such as the Humanities and the Social Sciences can
respond to these unprecedented times. We hope that these discussions and
deliberations will create a space to test novel and inclusive methodologies of
research, teaching, and practice keeping in mind the paradigm shifts and
challenges that the pandemic has thrust upon us.
