Meeting Description:

We, the TRICKLET team at the RWTH Aachen University in Germany, are hosting a
translation studies conference on May 19-20, 2022. The conference theme is
“Model building in empirical translation studies”.

In recent years, a wide range of empirical studies have yielded insight on
various aspects of translations, using increasingly sophisticated
corpus-linguistic or psycholinguistic methods. It is time to take stock of
this empirical insight and review the contribution of these studies to an
emerging model or theory of translation that is grounded in empirical
evidence. This conference offers a space for the discussion of the
compatibility and convergence of these contributions, and whether the multiple
dimensions that they cover can be meaningfully integrated into one consistent
model of translation. Specifically, the conference will also encourage insight
into the role of language theory in an empirical translation model. We would
like to invite you to contribute to this joint effort and to enter this
discussion by presenting an oral paper or a poster.

At the moment, we are planning the conference as an in-person event, here with
us in Aachen. Below, you will find our call for papers. Please feel free to

2nd Call for Papers:

We would like to announce our second call for papers of the TRICKLET
conference on May 19-20, 2022. The conference theme is “Model building in
empirical translation studies”. Abstracts need to be submitted via e-mail by
November 12. Please send them as PDFs to events at ifaar.rwth-aachen.de.

As the conference aims at facilitating interaction, it is scheduled as an
in-person event, and we want to strongly encourage all the attendees to join
us here in Aachen. However, in those cases where attending in person is
impossible due to travel restrictions or health considerations, we will also
allow online participation. We will continually monitor the pandemic
situation, and if necessary, we will change the format in line with public
health regulations.

Papers on the topics below will be welcomed, though the following is by no
means an exhaustive list:

- Combining translation product and process perspectives
- Translation workflow studies
- The role of external agents (e.g. editors) in translation
- Individual variation/Style
- Translation shifts
- Innovative ways of analyzing typical properties and features of
translation/translationese
- Sources of explanation for translational features and constraints
- Literal/Default translation
- Translation as constrained communication
- Register variation
- (Multivariate approaches to) translation quality
- The role of translation resources in translation product and process
- Contribution of machine translation and post-editing to a translation model
- Language theory and translation theory
- Translation and bilingualism
- Translation into and out of the L2

Submissions:
Abstracts need to be submitted via e-mail by November 12. Please send them as
PDFs to events at ifaar.rwth-aachen.de. Try to avoid references to yourself in
the abstract.

The papers are required to have a strong empirical background either by
reporting empirical findings or by drawing on the results of previous
empirical studies for a contribution towards theorizing translation.
We welcome papers that draw on a wide range of (quantitative) empirical
methods including but not limited to corpus-based, experimental, observational
methods, combinations of methods and machine
learning approaches. Two types of submission will be accepted:

- Oral papers
- Posters

Abstracts should be between 800 and 1,000 words (please indicate whether you
prefer a paper or a poster presentation). Both types of submission should
include a list of references (not included in the word count). They should
provide a clear outline of the aim of the study, including clearly articulated
research question(s), details of the data and method(s), and results.
Preference will be given to papers that can already report results and that
evaluate the informativeness of findings with the help of statistics. We also
encourage contributions that discuss how their empirical findings can inform
an empirical model of translation.

Papers will be 20 minutes followed by 10 minutes of discussion. They will be
peer-reviewed by the scientific committee in a double-blind approach.

Notification of acceptance: 21 Jan 2022
