Meeting Description:
It has been known since antiquity that migration and the mobility of speakers
as carriers of different languages and cultures play a significant role in the
development of language areas. In the early modern period, for example, the
expansion policy of the European colonial powers was intricately connected
with the expansion of the corresponding speech communities. Thus, languages
native to Europe found their ways to colonies on all continents, where they
have been enjoying different statuses ever since. Not least, the slave trade,
a violent and forced form of migration, lead to the emergence of new
languages, so-called creole languages.
In today’s globalized society, migration and multilingualism have become
commonplace. On the one hand, the internationalization of speakers is
associated with enrichment. On the other hand, it also gives rise to language,
cultural, and identity conflicts which are partly due to the stigmatization of
certain speaker groups and are rooted in the ideological idealization of
national monolingualism. All forms of migration-related contact bring about a
wide range of phenomena that are addressed in language contact and
multilingualism research, for example, code-switching, code-mixing, the
development of ethnolects, language attrition, and numerous instances of
language transfer.
This year’s LIPP Symposium offers a platform to discuss the topic of Language
and Migration from different perspectives. Research from all linguistic
disciplines, including synchronic and diachronic studies of the topic, as well
as studies of all language varieties are welcome.

Bereits seit der Antike wissen wir, dass Migration und die Mobilität der
Sprecher als Träger von verschiedenen Sprachen und Kulturen eine bedeutende
Rolle für die Herausbildung der Sprachräume spielen. In der Frühen Neuzeit war
beispielsweise die Expansionspolitik der europäischen Kolonialmächte eng mit
der Expansion der entsprechenden Sprechergemeinschaften verknüpft, sodass
ursprünglich in Europa heimische Sprachen ihren Weg in die Kolonien auf allen
Kontinenten fanden, wo sie heute unterschiedlichen Status genießen. Nicht
zuletzt entstanden dabei im Kontext des Sklavenhandels, einer erzwungenen,
gewalttätigen Art der Migration, ganz neue Sprachen, sogenannte Kreolsprachen.
In unserer heutigen globalisierten Gesellschaft, in der Migration und die
damit verbundene Mehrsprachigkeit alltäglich geworden sind, stellt diese
Internationalisierung der Sprecher einerseits eine Bereicherung dar,
andererseits treten damit auch Sprach-, Kultur- und Identitätskonflikte auf,
die teilweise auf die Stigmatisierung bestimmter Sprechergruppen
zurückzuführen sind; sie wurzeln in der durch und durch ideologischen
Idealisierung einer nationalen Monolingualität. Alle Formen von
migrationsbedingten Kontakten führen zu einem breiten Spektrum an Phänomenen,
die in der Sprachkontakt- und Mehrsprachigkeitsforschung thematisiert werden,
wie beispielsweise code switching, code mixing, die Herausbildung von
Ethnolekten, Sprachverlust sowie verschiedene Bereiche des sprachlichen
Transfers.
Das 27. LIPP-Symposium bietet die Gelegenheit eines professionellen Austauschs
über das Thema Language and Migration aus unterschiedlichen Perspektiven und
aus der Sicht verschiedener sprachwissenschaftlicher Teildisziplinen.
Willkommen sind Beiträge zur diachronen und synchronen Sprachbetrachtung
dieses Phänomens sowie zu Sprachvarietäten weltweit.
