Special Issue on Contested Languages - Journal of Multilingual and
Multicultural Development

Contested languages are languages which are sufficiently linguistically
different from the main language of the country where they are spoken to be
categorised as separate languages, but have not gained official language
status, often being classified as “dialects” or “patois”. Most contested
languages are also endangered languages, and they differ from (uncontested)
minority languages in that their endangerment is exacerbated by their
contestedness.

This Special Issue aims to develop a further understanding of Contested
Languages and the dynamics of “language contestedness” from a theoretical,
empirical and methodological perspective. The volume will examine the
attitudes and assumptions that lie behind language contestedness as well as
investigate potential routes to escape it. We particularly encourage
contributions dealing with status, corpus and acquisition planning of
contested languages, comparison of language policy and planning between two or
more contested languages, attitudes towards contested languages,
Ausbau-ization of contested languages, linguistic taxonomy, the reduction of
contestedness (e.g. attitude change and/or development) and the role of
academia in perpetuating contestedness.
Overall, this Special Issue will build on the work of Craith (2006) and Wells
(2011) as well as address and further investigate issues that have been raised
in more recent research (Tamburelli & Tosco, 2021).

Best regards,

Dr. Marco Tamburelli
Prof. Mauro Tosco
