Subject: Survey on Phonological and Phonetic Pedagogy

Dear Colleagues,

You are being invited by Carnegie Mellon University to participate in a
voluntary research study which is a survey designed to assess the “state of
the field” with respect to pedagogy in phonology and phonetics. Broadly, we
seek to answer the question, who is teaching what, and how?

We are looking for linguists at any career stage who teach at least one course
in phonology and/or phonetics beyond introductory linguistics courses.

To participate in the survey: If you are able to contribute, please follow
this link, which will take you to the online consent form. If you consent to
participate in the study, you will then be taken to the questionnaire. It
should take approximately 10-15 minutes of your time. There is no compensation
for participating.

You have the option to complete the survey anonymously. At the end of the
survey, you will be asked whether you would like to be contacted for a
possible follow-up conversation; if you select “yes”, then you will be asked
to provide your name and email address. Note that regardless of your answer,
your responses to the survey will be anonymized and all data will be presented
in aggregate.

If you agree to be contacted for a follow-up conversation: In the event that
you agree to a follow-up conversation, we will arrange a mutually beneficial
time to have a 30-minute conversation via Zoom, which will be recorded. You
will be given the option of having any comments you make attributed to you
(e.g., Dr. Bjorndahl exclaimed, “Everyone should learn phonology!”) or
anonymised (e.g., As one junior faculty member exclaimed, “Everyone should
learn phonology!”).

Thank you!
