Gestures: How to analyse forms, functions, and meanings

Focus: - How to study speakers’ hand movements in terms of units of analysis and in terms of the forms these gestures take.
- How speakers refer to ideas through pointing and depiction.
- How manual gestures qualify what speakers say by indicating emphasis and different stances (perspectives).
- How some gestures are more, and others less, dependent on speech.
Minimum Education Level: MA


Special Qualifications:
The course is intended for MA students, PhD candidates, and professionals.


Description:
This introduction to gesture analysis is geared towards MA and PhD students as
well as professionals. It is intended for those who have no background in
gesture studies but who wish to learn more about communication by studying
speakers’ manual movements in relation to language use. The course will be
taught in English; it will be led by Prof. Alan Cienki (Director of the MA
program in Multimodal Communication at VU Amsterdam and of the Multimodal
Communication and Cognition Lab ‘PoliMod’ at Moscow State Linguistic
University). Registration is now open, and there is an early-bird discount for
those registering by Oct. 1.
