Call for Papers:

Gender, society and language in Latin America: transdisciplinary approaches to
constructing and deconstructing gender

The study of language and gender has become an established research field in
the past decades and researchers have examined the interrelations of language
and gender from different perspectives and in different scientific disciplines
ranging from sociolinguistics to social psychology and sociology. There has
been a shift from the traditional notion of gender as a binary, independent
variable towards the examination of the realization and construction of gender
and sexual identities in and through language use. However, so far there has
been relatively little collaboration between researchers representing
different disciplines. Also, most of the research and theory-building on
language and gender as well has focused on the English-speaking world.
Languages and societies of Latin America have received considerably less
attention.

The objective of this symposium is to bring together scholars working on
different aspects of language and gender in the Latin American context,
including linguists, sociologists and psychologists but also researchers
working on other fields related to language and gender. Possible topics
include but are not limited to:

- Construction of gender and identity through language use
- Language, gender and education
- Psychological aspects of language and gender
- Societal gender norms and their linguistic manifestations
- The role of gender in language policies
- Deconstructing gender in the Latin American context: what do we research
when studying ‘gender’?

The convenors of the symposium are about to initiate a four-year research
project entitled Gender, society and language use: evidence from Mexico and
Spain that will combine sociolinguistic, discourse analytical and social
psychological approaches to linguistic variation and gender. In addition to
offering a venue for presenting new research, the workshop is intended to
provide possibilities for networking and collaboration between the
researchers.

Please submit your abstract to this symposium, indicating the number of the
symposium (04.06 Gender, society and language: interdisciplinary approaches to
constructing and deconstructing gender in Latin America) on the web page of
the CEISAL conference by November 30, 2021:
https://www2.helsinki.fi/en/conferences/ceisal-2022

We accept abstracts written in the three languages of the conference: English,
Spanish, or Portuguese.

For additional information, please contact the workshop organizers
(pekka.posio at helsinki.fi).
