CJL Special Issues: ‘Commentaires’ on Replication, Falsification,
Confirmation, and Description

NB. Nous acceptons de soumissions en français aussi!

Some of the key parts of sound scientific endeavour do not involve original
argumentation or novel analysis, but instead test, confirm or falsify existing
arguments, replicate existing experimental results, or describe new empirical
patterns. Yet trends in linguistic publishing have made it increasingly
difficult to find a venue for this kind of work unless it is accompanied by a
detailed positive analysis. This prevents researchers from sharing certain
argumentation or results, potentially leading to duplication of effort when
others must “rediscover” existing insights. Squibs and short-form journals
like Snippets are intended to fill this gap, but the expectations for squibs
themselves have grown over the decades.

Here at CJL, the editors believe that this publication gap should be filled,
and so we wish to provide a new venue for short papers that address these
fundamental aspects of scientific inquiry.

The Canadian Journal of Linguistics is now accepting submissions for a series
of three special issues that will focus on often neglected aspects of good
scientific argumentation. These issues will exclusively contain short texts
(maximum 12 pages) that fall into one of four categories:

- Replication of an experiment published in the literature
- Falsification of an argument published in the literature
- Confirmation of an argument published in the literature
- Description of new patterns and data not found in the literature.

These ‘Commentaires’ are meant to be short papers that make specific points in
response to ongoing discussion in the literature, and these three issues are
planned to have short turn-around time for reviewing. We will not provide an
opportunity for revision and resubmission for these papers: papers will be
reviewed on a numeric scale, similar to practices used for reviewing
abstracts. To enable this, papers are expected to be submitted in fully
publishable quality (though minor editorial changes will be possible after
acceptance). Papers that do not meet this standard will not be sent out for
review.

To submit an article, go to the Canadian Journal of Linguistics/Revue
canadienne de linguistique website and click on ‘Submit your article’. When
submitting papers for these special issues, please be sure to select the
‘Brief report’ option (as opposed to Article, Squib, or Thematic Article).
