Subject: Online Repository of UK Language Policy Documents

We are delighted to announce the launch of a new online repository of UK
language policy documents: https://www.promotinglanguagepolicy.org/. We hope
this will be of use to policymakers, stakeholders and researchers.

The repository holds language policy documents concerning the UK as a whole
and its constituent jurisdictions. The repository’s emphasis is primarily on
legislation – it holds just over 1,500 pieces of primary and secondary
legislation – but it also features a range of documents which make
recommendations for policy or policymakers, authored by other bodies,
including, for instance, the British Academy and the British Council. There is
also a small section of European language policy. This is by no means an
exhaustive list of European policy but rather is limited to the key framework
documents within which UK language policy sits.

The included policy documents date from 1918 to the present. Documents are
split by the nation or nations to which the policy applies – UK, Scotland,
Northern Ireland etc. If a document relates to multiple nations, for instance
England and Wales, then it is listed for both nations. Almost all documents
featured are available in PDF format and are also hyperlinked to their
original source. This means that in the event that the source website is
removed or reconfigured, the policy documents will still be available on the
repository. The inclusion of the URL alongside the PDF also allows users to
explore the broader context in which the document was produced.
