Subject: Polish; Phonetics: Phonation Expert, Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznan, Poland

University or Organization: Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan
Department: Faculty of English
Job Location: Poznan, Poland
Web Address: https://wa.amu.edu.pl/wa/
Job Title: Phonation Expert
Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Phonation and Voice Quality, Sociophonetics, L2 Speech

Required Language(s): Polish (pol)

Description:

The Faculty of English at Adam Mickiewicz University, Poznań, Poland, is
seeking applications for a four-year post-doctoral position to work on a
research project entitled "Phonation in L1 and L2 speech" (funded by the
Polish National Science Centre – Narodowe Centrum Nauki, project number
2021/41/B/HS2/00239), starting in the fall of 2022.

The main empirical goals of the project are as follows:
 - to provide acoustic characterizations of 'typical' modal voice qualities in
Polish by linking perception results with acoustic measures of voice quality,
 - to examine conditions in which Polish uses non-modal phonation, in
particular creaky voice,
 - to examine the role of phonation in cuing phonological categories in Polish
(laryngeal contrasts, stress, vowel quality, etc.)
 - to examine phonation in the speech of Polish learners of English, both in
their L1 and L2,
 - to see to what extent Polish learners of English acquire phonation
properties that are found in L1 English, and
 - to investigate the effects of L2 learning on phonation types in L1 Polish.
The project has an additional theoretical goal of considering the implications
of phonation type for models of the phonetics-phonology interface.

The post-doc position is intended for a phonetician whose research has
concentrated on voice quality. Experience with Voice Sauce, or other tools for
extracting acoustic measure of phonation, is a must. Experience with EGG
analysis is also required, as is competence in current statistical methods
used in phonetics research. Experience with speech perception experiments
(e.g. in E-Prime), and an interest in phonological theory and/or
sociolinguistics, are also highly desirable.

The salary for the post-doc position, after taxes and deductions (including
health insurance and social insurance) will be about 6000 PLN per month, which
is higher than the median gross salary in Poland. In other words, compared to
most academic positions in Poland, this position is financially quite
comfortable. There is also an attractive budget for conference trips, and the
successful candidate can expect the project to fund their attendance at
important international phonetics, phonology, and/or L2 speech conferences.

Responsibilities:
 - Consultation with PI and other team members in the formulation of research
questions based on the relevant literature
 - Coordination of EGG data collection and analysis
 - Acoustic data extraction with VoiceSauce or other tools, including
identification of relevant acoustic measures, coordinating and double-checking
annotation of recordings
 - Statistical analyses
 - Preparation of perception stimuli and perception experiments (using E-Prime
or other tools) in cooperation with local team
 - Preparation of conference presentations and articles for publication

Requirements:
 - PhD degree in linguistics or speech science (there will be some flexibility
in the start-date for a qualified candidate who is just finishing their PhD
 - Experience with voice analysis: VoiceSauce, EGG, and other relevant tools
 - Experience with speech perception experiments (e.g. in E-prime)
 - Competence with current statistical methods in phonetics research
 - Respectable international publication record
 - Knowledge of Polish welcome but not required; the successful candidate will
be willing to learn some Polish over the course of the project

To apply for the position, please send the following documents by email to the
PI of the project, prof. Geoffrey Schwartz, at the email address below:
 - Motivation letter
 - Current CV including publication lists
 - Names and email addresses of two or three persons who can report on your
professional qualifications
