Full Title: Clause combining at the discourse-grammar interface: Answers from coordination, subordination and insubordination

Linguistic Field(s): Phonetics; Phonology; Semantics; Syntax; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Call Deadline: 10-Oct-2022

Meeting Description:

As previous research has pointed out (Haiman & Thompson 1988; Bybee & Noonan
2002), speakers’ strategies of clause combining in contexts of natural
language may be more diverse than hitherto accounted for. From assessing
different degrees of syntactic integration (Evans 2009) and different levels
of dependence (Mithun 2008; D’Hertefelt & Verstraete 2014) to exploring the
(non)discreteness of the categories of coordination and subordination (Croft
2001), scholars have developed an interest in new accounts for the diversity
of clause combining relations and strategies observed in discourse.

In the same vein, this panel aims to better understand the nature of the
discourse-grammar interface – conceived as the linguistic space where speakers
create, share and conventionalize new uses – by bringing together current
research exploring how different patterns of clause combining (i.e.
coordination, subordination and insubordination) can be found to receive other
uses in discourse than the ones observed so far.
In order to be as enriching as possible, this panel is open to a variety of
approaches, thus welcoming papers on:

- interactional data
- contrastive analysis
- corpus-based analysis
- multimodal approaches
- approaches from phonetics and prosody
- constructional approaches
- different languages (also presenting diverse typological configurations)
- different discourse contexts and text genres

In general, contributions to this panel should aim to answer questions like:
- How do grammar and discourse constraints interact to enable innovation?
- Which are the new uses that clause combining patterns are adopting in
discourse?
- How are those new uses reflected by formal marking?
- Which linguistic parameters allow and/or favour new uses in discourse?
- How can new uses affect category boundaries between different clause
combining patterns?

questions, for 20 minute-presentations (+ 10’ discussion time). Please submit
an abstract (min. 250 and max. 500 words) to the panel organizers by 10
October 2022 at the latest. Contact email: vroyo at uliege.be.

Accepted panel contributions need to be submitted via the IPrA conference
website (https://ipra2023.exordo.com/login) by 1 November 2022. Please note
