Location: Zurich, Switzerland
Contact Person: Ann-Marie Moser
Meeting Email: ann-marie.moser at ds.uzh.ch

Linguistic Field(s): Applied Linguistics; General Linguistics; Language Acquisition

Call Deadline: 31-Oct-2022

Meeting Description:

Variation is the occurrence of more than one form for one function and is
found at all levels of the linguistic system. Moreover, variation does not
only include variation between languages (= typology), but also within a
language or even within the speaker/writer itself (cf. e.g., the different
levels according to Flydal 1952 who is the first to raise the issue). We refer
here mainly to the second meaning, i.e., variation within a language system.

Variation has increasingly come into the focus of formal and functional
strands of linguistics in recent years (starting with Kayne 1996; see Völker
2009 discussing different types of variation), and with it the need to explain
linguistic variation. At the same time, variation within the language system
is a phenomenon that every speaker (including lay people) is aware of and has
also experienced, thus providing an experience-based, intuitive approach to
language.

Invited speakers: Raphael Berthelé (University of Fribourg), Rita Franceschini
(em., Free University of Bozen-Bolzano), Ulrike Freywald (Technical University
of Dortmund)

2nd Call for Papers:

The workshops of the LiDi series aim to establish a link between linguistic
research and didactic action in the classroom. In the Zurich workshop we would
like to combine findings from theoretical and descriptive linguistics in the
field of variation with the transfer to language didactics: How can the latest
findings from linguistic research be «translated» into meaningful pedagogical
linguistics (see e.g., Berthele/Udry 2019, Franceschini 2009, Wiese/Freywald
2017)?

Invited speakers: Raphael Berthelé (University of Fribourg), Rita Franceschini
(em., Free University of Bozen-Bolzano), Ulrike Freywald (Technical University
of Dortmund)

Workshop: April 4–5, 2023
